In comparison, most of the Indian states have announced far bigger bonuses and prize monies for the Indian winners. Haryana & Uttar Pradesh have announced cash awards of 6 Crores which is more than any nation showering on their Gold Medal-winning athletes.

India at Tokyo Olympics – Highest Cash Awards for Indian Athletes: Olympic gold medalists from Indian contingents will get cash awards ranging from Rs. 25 lakhs to Rs. 6 crores. Bajrang Punia’s home state, Haryana & UP have announced a cash award of Rs. 6 crores for gold and 2.5 crores for a bronze medal.
On the other hand, Indian paddler Sutirtha Mukherjee and gymnast Pranati Nayak’s home state West Bengal will award cash awards ranging from Rs. 25 lakhs(for a gold medal) to Rs. 10 lakh(for a bronze medal).
While the state awards are separate from the Rs 75 lakh (gold), Rs 50 lakh (silver), and Rs 30 lakh (bronze) that the Central Government offers to Olympics medallists, the reason for the disparity in the cash awards is because the monetary value of an Olympics medal in India depends on where the medallist hails from.

Manoj Tiwary, former cricketer and West Bengal’s new Minister of State for Affairs of Sports and Youth, said to the Indian Express: “As per the 2018 order of the West Bengal government, for the Olympic Games, prize money for a gold medallist is Rs 25 lakh. For a silver medallist, the prize money announced was Rs 15 lakh, while a bronze medallist gets Rs 10 lakh. From West Bengal, three sportspersons are going to the Olympics this year, and we will do what needs to be done for their encouragement.”
India will be sending its largest contingent ever to the Olympics, with 127 members showcasing their talent at the showpiece event. The Indian athletes will be competing across 18 sports, which is way more than what they competed in at the last Olympics.

Haryana has 31 athletes, the most from any state in the Indian contingent.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Haryana has contributed 9 out of the 16-members squad of the women’s hockey team and 8 wresters (4 men, 4 women).
