India at Tokyo Paralympics: Sumit Antil shatters World Record to bag GOLD, Avani Lekhara wins maiden GOLD, Kathunia, Jhajharia grab SILVER –  After a wonderful Day 5 where India bagged two silver medals and a bronze, It’s raining medals for India at Tokyo Paralympics on Day 6. Sumit Antil joined Avani Lekhara to clinch India’s second gold at the Paralympics, shattering the world record to clinch the win. Antil threw a distance of 68.55m to clinch the top podium spot, in a stellar performance in Tokyo. Avani Lekhara began the tally by claiming first Gold for India with a new Paralympic record while Yogesh Kathunia has bagged a silver in men’s discus throw. Meanwhile, Devendra Jhajharia has also won a Silver medal in the men’s javelin throw while Sundar Singh Gurjar added a Bronze medal in the event.

Swaroop Mahavir meanwhile suffered heartbreak after he agonisingly missed out on a podium finish in the Tokyo Paralympics. Mahavir finished fourth in the Men’s 10m air rifle standing SH1, just 0.3 points off bronze medalist Andrii Doroshenko of Ukraine. The Indian shooter led all athletes in the initial rounds, but two not so good efforts saw him slip down the rankings, eventually finishing fourth in a closely contested final. Javelin ace Sandeep Chaudhary also finished fourth in Men’s Javelin Throw finals.

Shooting: Women’s 10m AR Standing SH1 @ 5 AM: Qualification Round: Avani Lekhara: The day starts with Avani Lekhara in women’s 10m Air Rifle shooting in SH1 category. The 19-year-old World No 5 is a strong contender for a medal but it will be a difficult task against a strong field. It includes current world record holder Iryana Shchetnik besides Rio Paralympics bronze medallist Yaping Yan from China.

Men’s Discuss F56 Final @ 6:05 AM: Yogesh Kathuniya: After Vinod Kumar broke the Asian record in F52 discus throw, Yogesh Kathuniya is aiming for a gold medal finish. The former World Record holder in F36 category with a throw of 45.18m, Yogesh Kathuniya made a statement. Now, in the F56 classification, his personal best is 44.47 but he has is aiming to break the World Record mark of 46.68 and bag gold. But it will not be an easy task. He will face stiff competition from Brazil’s Batista dos Santos, the current World Record holder.

Men’s Shooting 10m Air Rifle SH1 Qualification @ 7:15AM: Deepak, Swaroop Mahavir Unhalkar: In men’s shooting, Deepak and Swaroop Mahavir Unhalkar will be in action. The duo will be up against a world-class field comprising current world record holder Jinho Park of South Korea, Laslo Suranji of Serbia, the Rio Paralympics gold medallist amongst others. Both will have to be at their best to challenge for a medal. If they qualify amongst the Top 8, the final will be held in the evening.

India at Tokyo Paralympics Day 6: Men’s Javelin Throw F46 @ 7:33 AM: Devendra Jhajaria, Sundar Singh Gurjar, Ajeet Singh: The most important event of the day will be the men’s javelin throw F46 as Devendra Jhajharia will be aiming to script history. The 40-year-old repeated 2004 Athens performance with a gold medal at Rio Paralympics with a world record throw of 63.97m. Now, at 40, he is still hungry for more. In what could be his last Paralympics, the Indian legend will need to give his best as the field will also consist of two fellow Indians Sundar Singh Gurjar and Ajeet Singh. The two have watched him closely and will look to trump him at his own game. Ajeet Singh is also the reigning World Champion while Gurjar is a former world champion.

Men’s Javelin Throw F64 Final @ 3:30 PM: Sandeep Chaudhary, Sumit Antil: The day will end with Men’s F64 Javelin Throw final with Sandeep Chaudhary and Sumit Antil vying for gold medal for India. Sandeep is currently the World Record holder with a throw of 62.88m and is a strong contender for a gold medal. But he will have plenty of competition from a strong field beside his countryman Sumit Antil. He bagged a silver medal at the 2019 World Championship and will look to draw inspiration from that performance.
