India tour of Sri Lanka: 5 Indian players for whom Sri Lanka series could be last chance to reclaim spot in core Indian Team: The upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka could be the last opportunity for some of the Indian players to reclaim their spot in the core Indian Team. With the Indian bench already overflowing with players, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Manish Pandey, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav probably have the last chance to keep their hopes alive in the Indian Team. The two teams will clash in the first ODI starting from July 18 in Colombo.

Here at InsideSport, we hog some light on the likely Indian players for whom it is imperative to perform against the island country to secure their international cricket career.

India tour of Sri Lanka: Shikhar Dhawan: Despite being adjudged as the standing captain for team India, his performance in the series against Australia is crucial to saving his international career.

For long, nearly the last 18 months, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma have been India’s preferred opening pair in T20Is. Additionally, with Virat Kohli’s statement claiming Dhawan as a backup opener in the unavailability of either two, Dhawan’s performance against Sri Lanka comes as the only rescue option. Even though his averages in ODI (45.28) and T20I (27.88) still remain relevant, he has otherwise peripheral pressure biting his spot.

Manish Pandey: This ideal number 4 batsman for team India, Pandey is almost hit by the dint of his selection luck. Even his stats in the shorter format of the game- 35.14 (ODI average) and 44.31 (T20I average) fairly vouch to back him up, his string of below-par performance with the willow puts his inclusion in the squad at stake. Further with the tough competition from Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and other young faces, it is of paramount importance for Pandey to display his skills against Sri Lanka whenever offered a chance.

Yuzvendra Chahal: From being India’s No 1 spinner before 2019 to struggling for a spot in the core Indian Team, it has been a journey for Chahal. Courtesy of his dwindling performance that saw a string of poor performances for India as well as RCB in the IPL, he has a big task at hand against Sri Lanka. Chahal’s off-shore performance- unable to get breakthroughs along with undisciplined bowling saw Krunal Pandya’s inclusion during the recent England series.

Kuldeep Yadav: The person in crime along with Chahal, even Kuldeep’s performance has shown eclipsed performance much like his partner. His soaring 9+ economies in T20Is coupled with his exclusion from Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2021 say a lot of his rough patch. It is important for him to display his bowling action which might otherwise see him axing permanently from the Indian Team.

Sanju Samson: The swashbuckling right-handed batsman has smashed big hits for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL but has been unable to render the same services for the men in blue. In the 7 T20Is he has played for Team India, he has mustered only 83 runs, averaging just 11.86. It is crucial for him to put his best against the island country as Ishan Kishan, another wicketkeeper-batsman can be a tough contender to his otherwise shaky spot.
