India Tour of Sri Lanka – Covid-19 in SriLanka Team: Despite postponing the series by five days, India vs Sri Lanka limited-overs series has been dealt a further blow. On Saturday, a batsman from Sri Lanka’s alternate squad — Sandun Weerakkodi — tested positive for COVID-19. As per local media reports in the island nation, the batsman was with the second group of players who were sharing the same Taj Samudra hotel in Colombo along with Dhawan-led Team India. The 1st ODI is slated for July 18.

As a result, the entire Sri Lanka team (alternate group) has been transferred to a different hotel while India players will remain there for now. The news comes after two members of the first team which returned from England on July 6 tested positive. After batting coach Grant Flower, performance analyst GT Niroshan was infected with the more infectious Delta variant, forcing the entire squad to be quarantined.

India Tour of Sri Lanka – Covid-19 in SriLanka Team: As per Newswire, Sandun Weerakkodi along with Bhanuka Rajapaksa and few other cricketers were sent to Dambulla on Friday night to play practice matches with the third group of players currently in a bio-bubble in Dambulla. Players from the second group have all been transferred to Cinnamon Grand hotel following the COVID scare.

Apart from Sandun Weerakkodi, Asela Guneratne, Angelo Perera, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa who were in the same group will also be quarantined will miss out on the India series. However, the group of 24 cricketers who are in bio-bubble in Dambulla are not affected as per SLC officials.

With the first team in quarantine, Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva declared that the board is preparing to field an alternate team for the India series. However, now that the second group has also been quarantined, Sri Lanka will have to pick a squad from the Dambulla bio-bubble.

India Tour of Sri Lanka: As per Sri Lanka’s Daily FT, SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva said that “in the event that there are more positive cases leading up to the first ODI on 17 July, they were preparing to field an alternate team from the squads that are practising in Dambulla and in Colombo and are in a bio-bubble.”

On Saturday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah officially confirmed that the series has been rescheduled to July 18 due to the current COVID-19 crisis in Sri Lanka cricket.
