India tour of Sri Lanka: Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunatileke & Niroshan Dickwella to face disciplinary inquiry on July 29 – Sri Lanka’s tainted trio of Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunatileke & Niroshan Dickwella will face a disciplinary inquiry over the incident in which they had violated quarantine regulations while on tour to England on July 29.

Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka — dubbed as the “terrible trio” by Sri Lankan media — were videotaped roaming on Durham streets during their tour of England. The players had been told they were not allowed to go towards Durham City Centre. Yet the cricketers were caught on camera smoking. In the video that was shot at around 11.30 PM on Sunday, Kusal Mendis was seen with a cigarette in his hand while not wearing a mask. Niroshan Dickwella was the other cricketer with him. Soon, Danushka Gunathilaka joined the two.

India tour of Sri Lanka: Later, SLC decided to form a panel to investigate the disciplinary issue. The panel is yet to start its inquiry.

  • Justice Nimal Dissanayaka (Retd Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka)
  • Panduka Keerthinanda, Attorney-at-Law
  • Asela Rekawa, Attorney-at-Law
  • Uchitha Wickremasinghe, Attorney-at-Law
  • Major General (Retd) M.R.W. De Zoysa

India tour of Sri Lanka: According to reports, the trio has written to the panel apologizing for the incident.

Timeline of the events

  • Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka were sent home for breaching COVID restrictions in Durham, UK.
  • They were immediately suspended and SLC called for a formal inquiry.
  • SLC formed a high-profile committee to investigate the matter.
  • It has been 16 days and the panel is yet to send the suspension letter and the investigation hasn’t progressed an inch.
  • Sri Lanka media is asking questions whether third-party motivation is behind SLC pushing the matter under the carpet.
  • Inquiry to take place on 29th
