India tour of Sri Lanka: After being dropped from Team India following a poor run in Australia, Prithvi Shaw had questioned his abilities. But a magnificent Vijay Hazare performance, followed by a golden IPL run, the young Mumbai batsman received a lifeline when he was picked for the Sri Lanka tour for three ODIs and as many T20Is starting July 13. Shikhar Dhawan will lead the side as India will have another team in the UK for the Test series against England.
In an exclusive chat, the youngster told InsideSport that he is eager to get back to the Indian side and use the opportunity to the fullest. “Yes, it is a good opportunity for me. I am happy for getting picked again. I’m really looking forward to the series,” Prithvi Shaw told InsideSport.
India tour of Sri Lanka: Prithvi Shaw was dropped following a horrid run in Australia and New Zealand. He was criticized for his technique and received no backing from skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri. Kohli even criticized his execution and the manner he was dismissed in the only Test he played in Australia.
After coming back home, Prithvi Shaw went through a difficult phase where he lost self-belief and suffered a bout of depression. “When I was dropped in Australia I got into depression and broke down. Self-doubt had crept in and I was standing hopelessly in front of the mirror wondering was I not good enough at the highest level,” Shaw told InsideSport in March.
India tour of Sri Lanka: However, he bounced back in the domestic circuit, scoring tons of runs. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he broke records after records as he scored 827 runs with a fascinating average of 165.40 for Mumbai. In eight innings, he scored four centuries including a double ton of 227.
While he worked on his technique and returned to form, he was not considered for the England limited-overs series at home and India’s tour of England besides the World Test Championship Final. Instead, he was asked to reduce weight and gain fitness to be considered again.
India tour of Sri Lanka: He did just that and continued his golden run of form in the IPL. Prithvi Shaw slammed 308 runs in 8 matches at an average of 38.50 and a strike rate of 166.48 as he continued to reinvigorate his form. His knocks included three half-centuries as he decimated opponents bowling attacks. His opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan also stood out with whom Shaw notched up two century stands and three half-century stands for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2021.
With stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan by his side as the opening partner, he will like to resume from where left in the IPL 2021. Prithvi Shaw told InsideSport that given a chance in Sri Lanka, he would like to continue the same opening form that he shared with Shikhar Dhawan in IPL 2021.
“Yes, we had a really good partnership during IPL. We connected well, performed well together. If given a chance in Sri Lanka, I would love to resume the same partnership,” Prithvi Shaw said.
India tour of Sri Lanka: Now that he has been given another chance, he will aim to cement his position with some fine knocks under Rahul Dravid’s supervision. But he will face tough competition from Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal who has been in fine form too. However, Shaw has special plans for Sri Lanka and would like to show that on the pitch and not reveal it before.
“Of course, I do have plans for the Sri Lanka series. But I cannot reveal the plans just yet,” Shaw said.
