India Tour of Sri Lanka: SLC confirms, ‘Angelo Mathews asked to be relieved’ ahead of India series – After reports emerged that Angelo Mathews is considering retirement from international cricket, it sent shockwaves ahead of the India series. However, later on Wednesday, SLC confirmed the reports saying he has asked to be relieved of the tour contract and not consider him for the series. Kusal Perera-led Sri Lanka will lock horns with Shikhar Dhawan’s Team India for 3 ODIs and as many T20Is.
“Angelo Mathews, who was included in the respective 30-member squad, requested Sri Lanka Cricket to relieve him from National Duties, owing to personal reasons, until further notice,” SLC said in a statement.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that barring Angelo Mathews, 29 other players have agreed to sign tour contracts, thus rendering them available for the India series. But it comes as a major blow for the struggling Sri Lanka team under Kusal Perera’s captaincy. After a sweeping loss in England, India will be a major challenge in absence of experienced Angelo Mathews.
