India vs England: Sunil Gavaskar declares, ‘Whoever watched Joe Root’s knock is fortunate’ – Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on Joe Root after the England captain’s man of the match performance during the first Test at Trent Bridge. The 30-year-old put in a clutch performance, scoring a fluent 64 in the first innings, following it up with a counter-attacking 109 to keep Virat Kohli and Co at bay. What’s impressive is nobody in the side scored more than Sam Curran’s 32, putting Root in a league of his own.

India vs England: While reviewing the first Test of the India tour of England, former captain Sunil Gavaskar had nothing but praise for Joe Root, who help the hosts remain in the contest before a washout meant that the two teams settled for a draw. Gavaskar said, “Whoever watched Joe Root’s knock is fortunate that they saw such a knock. You get to see very few knocks like this in Test cricket, the second-innings century of Joe Root was an extremely good knock.”

India vs England: The cricketer-turned broadcaster hailed Root’s effort as a captain’s innings and said that it was extra special as it came in a difficult situation for his team. Gavaskar said that the England captain walked into bat with Virat Kohli and Co. still leading, and his side had to cross the 95-run mark and then set a target. He added that the way Root batted, it seemed like he had carried on from his first innings.

Sunil Gavaskar said, “The way Joe Root batted it seemed like the top score he had made in the first innings, he had scored 64 runs, he had the confidence of that knock in the second innings. Otherwise, we can also see from a different angle, that he probably wanted to attack the Indian bowlers. If he had not attacked, the Indian bowlers would have been on top of the England batting and they might have faced some difficulty.”

India tour of England: Joe Root top-scored with 64 as England were bundled out for 183 in their first innings. The Indians put on 278, with England needing to rub off a 95-run deficit to set a target. Root rose to the challenge and took the attack to Virat Kohli and Co, scoring a scintillating century, to guide England to 303. India were 52/1 while chasing before rain curtailed the Test match and it ended in a draw.
