The FIFA World Cup 2018 final on July 15 has created a record for sports viewership on Indian television. For the first time in the history of sports broadcast in the country, cricket has been left behind by another sporting discipline in the Indian television viewership ratings.
The FIFA World Cup 2018 final between France and Croatia is the most-watched sports content on Indian television for the week between July 14-20. The World Cup is watched by more people on Sony Ten 2 than any other sports programme during the week, which also featured the last two of the three one-day internationals between England and India. The World Cup final on Sony Ten 2 is recorded as the most-watched sports genre show in the Broadcast Audience Research Council Television ratings for Week 29 (July 14-20). The France-Croatia final on July 14 has registered 57,01,000 impressions, while the third and final match of the England-Series is placed second with 53,21,000 impressions on Sony Ten
Sony Ten 3 also consolidated its position as the No. 1 sports genre channel on the combined strength of cricket and football. Even as Sony Ten 2 has to its credit the No. 1 sports genre programme for the week, the live broadcast of the second and third England-India ODIs and the FIFA World Cup Hindi programming on Sony Ten 3 have been in the top five programmes list. These 3 programmes have contributed majorly to make Sony Ten 3 the No 1 sports genre channel for the week with 229,402,000 impressions. Sony Six for live cricket is second with 130,724 impressions.
With the FIFA World Cup already over and no significant cricket to count in the next week ratings, it will be interesting to see how sports genre broadcast as well as two leading sports broadcasters in India – Star and Sony – fare when there is no considerable television rating driver.
