The only ‘successful’ Indian Premier League team on financial balance sheets, is also the most rocking in the social media world. Kolkata Knight Riders are as much popular among fans as they are being accepted by the sports market. The Shah Rukh Khan-led franchisee, with a consolidated fan base of 16.975 on twitter, facebook and instagram, has trumped all its rivals on the IPL social media turf. Mumbai Indians are the distant second with 13.9 million.

KKR’s reach includes 14.68 mn on Facebook, 2.29mn on Twitter and 257 thousand followers on Instagram. However, in spite of Shah Rukh Khan’s presence, KKR is lagging behind Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on the visual front, who both are followed by a one-million strong fan base on Instagram.

Mumbai Indians  enjoying a connect with 10.72 million fans on Facebook, 2.18 million followers on Twitter and another 1 million on Instagram. The galaxy of the likes of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, A B De Villiers and Shane Watson under the Royal Challengers Bangalore umbrella is followed by have 9.08 million Facebook fans, besides 1.87 million on Twitter and 1.1 million on Instagram. Clearly, the big hitters on the cricket field have not translated into followers for the online world.

Placed at No. 4 are Preity Zinta-led franchisee, Kings XI Punjab with a total fan base of 2.51 million with 1.05 million follower on twitter, 765 thousand on facebook and 381 thousand fanbase on Instagram. With Twitter rockstar Virender Sehwag heading operations and strategy for the team, it will be interesting to see how the Punjab team fares on the social media, specially the twitter, wicket.

Also for academic interest, the Indian Premier League has a base of 4.75 million fans on twitter, 18.48 million on facebook and one million on instagram.
