Delhi Government has opened its coffers for the promising athletes from the State. The State sportspersons who represent India in international events will benefit by up to ₹16 lakh annually.
The State Government has released a full page advertisements to announce the “ambitious scheme for talented and emerging sportspersons”.
The Delhi athletes representing India in international competitions, under the “Mission Excellence”, will receive ₹16 annually to meet the expenses of their training and coaching.
The other promising talent, primarily students, who are preparing to participate in national and international competitions will get up to ₹ 3 lakh under the “Play and Progress” scheme. The State has announced to pay ₹2 lakh per annum to the athletes who are below 14 years of age, while the sportspersons in the 14-17 year age group will get ₹ 3 lakh towards their training and coaching.
“Delhi Government has started these schemes to nurture and promote talented sportspersons. Delhi Government is committed that no sportsperson or student should be left from training due to shortage of funds,” says Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“You have to concentrate on your training and coaching with full devotion and honesty. You will not be deprived of anything. You have to take a pledge that you that you will bring laurels for the country and your parents.”
Sports personalities like Manika Batra, Divya Kakran and Yuki Bhambri will be among the elite talent to benefit from the scheme.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had revealed last year the proposed “Mission Sports 100” to fund 100 sportspersons excelling in their field. The government had formed an Experts Committee comprising internationally acclaimed and awarded sportspersons to determine the benefits and beneficiaries.
The sportsperson under the scheme will be supported for their needs related to food, nutrition, sports equipment as well as medical assistance.
The scheme also aims to provide State-funded support to sportspersons to compete for selection procedure in upcoming major international events such as 2020 Olympics, 2022 Asian Games, 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Olympics
The Delhi government had earlier this year had also hiked the cash incentive for the State athletes who win a gold medal in the Olympics/Paralympics from ₹1 crore to ₹3 crore.
Similarly, silver and bronze medal winners will now get ₹2 crore and ₹1 crore respectively.
