Chennai Super Kings succumbed to yet another embarrassing defeat as Delhi Capitals scripted a fightback to win a thriller of a contest in the last over. With CSK needing 5 wins from 6 matches, this fixture was a must win tie for MS Dhoni’s men, allowing very few margin of errors. However, it seemed like MS Dhoni overstepped his luck and gambled with his odds and this time it did not pay off.
With CSK stuck in the bottom half of the table at 6th needing to win every match to make the playoffs, let’s retrospect three such decision by the ‘Thala’ which cost CSK a very crucial tie.
IPL 2020: Handing Jadeja the decisive last over (DC needed 17 runs from 6 balls)
The Capitals needed 17 runs off last six balls thanks to a sensational penultimate over from Sam Curran where he conceded only four. However, to everyone’s surprise, MS Dhoni went with Ravindra Jadeja, the left-arm spinner, to defend the total in the last over. Both the left-handed batsmen were in the middle in Dhawan and Axar and the latter smacked the bowler out of the park at will to win the game for his team.
In real time, it felt like Dhoni was gambling. But a the presentation he said, “Bravo was not fit. So he went out and he was not really able to come back. That was the reason. The option was Karn or Jaddu so I went ahead with Jaddu,”
IPL 2020: Playing Dwayne Bravo despite not being fit
Dhoni’s press-conference statement is what bring us to his next debatable decision. Dhoni mentioned that he handed the ball over to Jadeja since Bravo wasn’t exactly fit. If Dwayne Bravo was indeed not match-fit, why was he included in the squad?
With the CSK top and middle order ending with a flourish, Bravo didn’t have to bat. With fresh energy, Bravo channelised into his bowling, and did so wonderfully finishing with figures of 3-0-23-1.
Bravo has been a proven death bowler in the past and has propelled CSK to win in extremely tight contests. However, Dhoni’s decision to not use Bravo indeed backfired as Jadeja was completely blindsided by Axar’s three consecutive sixes.
When exactly did Bravo got injured ? Nothing during the game suggested that Bravo got injured during the match. When exactly Bravo got injured ? Was he carryiny any injury ? All these questions stay unanswered.
IPL 2020: Replacing Kedhar Jadhav in place of Piyush Chawla
Kedar Jadhav has failed to get going in IPL 2020 and was put on the sidelines in the last couple of matches. Jadhav last played during CSK’s 10 run loss against KKR where the right-hander struggled to middle the ball and crawled to an unbeaten 7 off 12 balls which led to the team’s defeat.
Having scored 58 runs at an average and strike rate of 19.33 and 98.30 respectively in 7 matches so far, Jadhav has found it difficult to score runs throughout the season. Therefore, it came as a surprise why Jadhav was included in the Playing XI as he barely had any part to play in the contest apart from being a mere spectator.
Would not have been better if CSK had another extra bowler in the squad ?
Dhoni and CSK’s decision making now really has left the team in tatters. CSK is yet to play 5 games in IPL 2020 and all of those would have to be won if Chennai Super Kings has to qualify for the play-offs of the 13th edition of the league.
