IPL 2020: After Captain Dinesh Karthik, will Batsman DK be dropped from Kolkata Knight Riders playing XI?

In Dream11 IPL 2020, one after the other disappointing performance from Dinesh Karthik has become a norm. The horror run for DK continues non-stop in the Indian Premier League 2020. Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday dropped him as the captain of the team and gave the captaincy band to Eoin Morgan. It was believed that this would relieve him of the added pressure of captaincy and he could concentrate on his batting. However, Karthik’s difficulty in hitting the ball did not end when Kolkata locked horns against Mumbai Indians.

This bad patch has given the KKR management a big headache. How will they solve the Karthik predicament ahead of their crunch match against Sunrisers Hyderabad? Will KKR take the tough call and drop him? After dropping Karthik from captaincy, will Karthik the batsman be dropped from KKR Line Up on Sunday ?

Don’t be surprised it you see that happening.

IPL 2020: Dinesh Karthik’s performance this season for Kolkata Knight Riders

Barring Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, DK is the worst performer in KKR’s batting line-up. However, what his other two team-mates could not to with bat, they did with the ball. But it is not the same story for Karthik.

In eight matches played, he has scored just 112 runs with one fifty against KXIP. Besides his half-century and 30-runs contribution against Mumbai Indian in the opening match, Karthik has not crossed the 20-runs mark. To add to his batting woes, he has failed to score in double digits on four occasions.

At InsideSport Moneyball Impact rank he is placed 43rd, while his value for money ranking is 84. Karthik’s form has been troublesome for KKR who are yet to find the right middle-order combination.

But if KKR takes tough call to drop Karthik, who can replace him in the playing XI?

IPL 2020 : If not Karthik what are the options for KKR ? Tom Banton or Nikhil Naik ?

If KKR decides to bench DK, the biggest headache for them would be to find his replacement behind the stumps. Their best choice is youngster Tom Banton. However, to play him they will have to rest one of their overseas players. Most likely it will be Chris Green who came in place of Sunil Narine.

Another possibility is bringing in feisty wicket-keeper batsman Nikhil Naik. The 25-year-old, after having led the under-16 and under-19 Maharashtra sides to national title, he made his List-A debut against Gujarat in 2014 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

He was one of the finds of the tournament, scoring 234 runs in four matches at 58.50.

His big-hitting caught the eyes of Mumbai Indians with whom he trialled, but an IPL contract did not materialise. It did the following year when Kings XI Punjab bought him for INR 30 lakh. He was retained by the franchise in 2015 ahead of the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in which he scored 196 runs in five matches at 39.20.

KKR might want to look into new options and give young legs chance before it gets too late. They are currently placed fourth in the points table and therefore can make minor changes to the squad.

They play Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. A win will help them get closer to the play-offs, however, a loss will make things difficult for them.
