IPL 2020: After making IPL history, can Nortje break Shoaib Akhtar’s fastest ball record?

Delhi Capitals pacer Anrich Nortje created Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Wednesday when he bowled a delivery clocking 156.22 kmph against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2020 match in Dubai. But now the expectations are increasing. The fastest bowl in IPL history is thing of past and now the 26-year-old South Africa pacer is targeting Shoaib Akhtar’s all-time fastest bowl record.

Former Pakistan pacer Akhtar recorded fastest bowl in the history of cricket which clocked 161.3 kph and was bowled during the 2003 World Cup fixture against England. Now Nortze is eyeing Akhtar’s 17-year-old record.

“HOPEFULLY IT’S SOMETHING I’VE GOT IN ME AND IT’S DEFINITELY SOMETHING I’VE WANTED TO DO,” NORTJE TOLD HIS CAPITALS TEAM-MATE R ASHWIN ON THE LATTER’S YOUTUBE CHANNEL THIS WEEK. “MAYBE A GOOD WICKET, SOME ADRENALINE, THE RIGHT COMBINATION AND I CAN DO IT THIS IPL OR MAYBE IN THE FUTURE.”, said the South African & Delhi Capitals pacer.

Notably, Nortje clocked 156.22 kmph against RR opener Jos Buttler in the third over of the Royals’ run-chase, which was scooped for a four by the right-hander. That is the fastest delivery recorded in IPL history since a speed gun was introduced in the tournament. In the tournament’s 13-year history no one has bowled as fast as Nortje.
Nortje went past his South African compatriot Dale Steyn, who previously held the record at 154.4 kph which he set while playing for Deccan Chargers in 2012.
Fastest Balls in the history of IPL:
  1. Anrich Nortje – 156.2kmph
  2. Anrich Nortje – 154.8kmph
  3. Dale Steyn – 154.4kmph
  4. Anrich Nortje – 154kmph
  5. Kagiso Rabada – 153.9kmph

This is Nortje’s maiden IPL season as he was roped in by the Delhi franchise as a replacement for England all-rounder Chris Woakes ahead of the start of the season. The 26-year-old has proved to be a brilliant signing for DC so far and he has cemented his spot in the playing XI. Interestingly, Nortje has formed a lethal partnership with his countryman Kagiso Rabada in the Delhi Capitals’ pace attack.

The South African speed merchant bowled the second and third-fastest delivery in IPL as well after recording a pace of 155.21 and 154.74 respectively.
