IPL 2020 already has created record of most ever Super Over finishes this season

Looks like Super Over is becoming the new normal in Indian Premier League 2020 as the tournament has already witnessed four matches being decided via Super Overs.

Interestingly, this is the first time in the history of IPL that there has been more than two Super Overs in a single edition of the cash-rich league.

To put things into perspective, in all, the IPL has had 14 super overs in its 12-year history and five of them have come in IPL 2020, that too within a month of its commencement.
In the first five seasons of the IPL, all of two matches went to the super over, while IPL 2013 witnessed two super overs. Since then, nine matches have gone down to the wire, with there being one super over each in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and two in 2019.

IPL 2020 Record: Most Super Over finishes in One Day
Here’s how things panned out on ‘Super Sunday’

It was a ‘Super Sunday’ in the IPL 2020 as it witnessed three Super Overs in a day – an event which occurred for the first time in the history of IPL. It was a day of double-header and both the games, KKR vs SRH and MI vs KXIP were decided in their respective Super Overs. Interestingly, prior to Sunday, there wasn’t a single day in IPL history which witnessed more than one Super Over, but it all changed on October 18.

Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2020 match no. 35)

Chasing a 164-run target, SRH needed 18 runs to win in the last over and the team’s captain David Warner took full advantage of KKR all-rounder Andre Russell bowling with a short run-up due to an injury.

SUPER OVER (First of the day)

With bowling figures of 4-0-15-3, Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for KKR in his first IPL 2020 match and the Kiwi pacer didn’t disappoint as he dismissed Warner and Abdul Samad in the Super Over, leaving KKR with only a three run-target to chase.

Chasing a paltry 3-run target in the super over, Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan and wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik sealed the chase without much discomfort.

Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab (IPL 2020 match no. 35)

Chasing a 177-run target against MI, KXIP skipper KL Rahul smashed a scintillating 51-ball 77 to take his team on the brink of a successful chase but team-mates Deepak Hooda and Jordan could only level the scores at 176 for six in the stipulated 20 overs.
