It seems Sri-Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) offers to host the Indian Premier League 2020 (IPL 2020) has not gone down well with the Indian counterparts. InsideSport.co spoke to one of the well-placed official in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the SLC’S offer to host IPL 2020 and he slammed it as ‘complete preposterous thought’.

According to the BCCI official, Sri Lanka Cricket should have spoken to people in BCCI before releasing such a statement.

“This offer by SriLanka is a complete preposterous thought. They have released this statement on their own. BCCI has never ever discussed taking IPL out of the country. Moreover, how someone can say at this stage SriLanka will recover faster than India from Coronavirus. This is not the time to be opportunistic and they should have spoken to BCCI even before releasing such a statement”.

After BCCI officially suspended the IPL 2020 season indefinitely yesterday, SLC president Shammi Silva gave an interview to Reuters claiming that SLC is ready to host the season of IPL 2020 and for the same he will write to BCCI.

“It looks like Sri Lanka will be clear of the coronavirus before India,” SLC president Shammi Silva told Reuters in Colombo. “If so, we can host the tournament here. We will be writing to the Indian cricket board soon,” he added. In comparison to India which currently has more than 13,000 Covid-19 cases, SriLanka according to the last reports has 238 confirmed cases with 7 deaths. Like India, SriLanka also currently is under lockdown since the past few weeks. Like India in SriLanka also all sporting activities are completely stalled.

But the big question is BCCI open to take IPL 2020 overseas ?

According to the BCCI official no such discussion has happened with in BCCI till now.

“How someone can have such a discussion at this stage, tell me which country is not impacted by Covid19 ? The entire world is reeling under Coronavirus menace. I don’t think so it makes any sense to even discuss about these things at this stage”.

On Thursday this year’s IPL was officially postponed by BCCI. The Indian cricket board believes it can still find a “safe” window later for the lucrative Twenty20 tournament. Speculations are rife in media on a possible window for the IPL in September-October, before this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia. The eight-team league, originally scheduled from March 29, was initially suspended until Wednesday even as India entered a three-week lockdown last month. With the lockdown being extended until May 3 and travel and other restrictions in place, a second postponement was inevitable. With health concerns and lockdown measures in mind, the IPL Governing Council decided to suspend the 2020 season until further notice, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.
“The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority…” Shah said. “…the BCCI along with the franchise owners, broadcaster, sponsors and all the stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so.”
