If there is one thing, which Virat Kohli had brought to the cricket, it was the importance of staying fit. However, it was a completely different story at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi which hosted the opening match of IPL 2020 between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on Saturday. Several players from both the teams were seen with a post-lockdown waist. This attracted a lot of fat-shaming from netizens and experts alike.
Viren Rasquinha, former Indian Hockey captain took to Twitter and pointed out the lack of fitness in cricketers. He tweeted: “I have never played more than gully cricket but I am pretty shocked to see some players in the #IPL2020 looking so unfit. I can’t think of another physical sport where players at the highest level could cope with these fitness levels.
Cricket expert and commentator Harsha Bhogle in a sarcastic tweet termed the waistline as ‘healthy’. “Couple of healthy waistlines today…”
Australian women cricketer Lisa Sthalekar was not far behind. She wrote: “Alright skinny mini…..careful of that chocolate mousse”.
Some Twitterati also termed this year’s IPL as ‘Indian Paunch League”.
MI captain Rohit Sharma and teammate Saurabh Tiwary were the main target. It shows, how the forced break due to lockdown had hurt some Indian players’ fitness level.
