For the first time in history, Chennai Super Kings are placed in the eighth position in IPL 2020 points table. It is not something that CSK’s fans and believers are used to. Are fans and cricket experts alike are once again asking – is 3-time IPL champions CSK’s Dads army getting too old? Does CSK have the legs and heart to compete with the young guns of other IPL teams ?
CSK will be on test once again as take on Sunrisers Hyderabad tonite in IPL 2020 – will the Dads army make a comeback or will they fail again ?
CSK started their campaign on a bright note with a win against Mumbai Indians but it has gone downhill since then with consecutive losses against Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. Now they face a big test at Dubai International Cricket Stadium against SRH in match 14 of IPL.
Will they pass or fail? Dhoni has often proved critics wrong, will he rise again to prove everyone wrong or will failure in the test derail CSK’s DADS ARMY forever.
CSK vs SRH Live : Age, fresh legs a big concern for Dhoni’s team
Chennai Super Kings is one of the oldest sides in terms of age with the average age being 31.41. Out of the 24 members 13 member’s are above the age of 30, oldest being Imran Tahir at 41 and youngest being Sam Curran at 22. This age-factor has always been a concern for the CSK side, who was criticised heavily after 2018 mega-auctions for buying too many veterans and overlooking young talent.
Dubbed as the ‘Daddy’s Army’, the team, however, silenced their critics by winning their comeback season in 2018. The following season they again pulled off a rabbit from the hat and this time it was MS Dhoni. The former Indian captain played an important role with the bat and amassed a total of 416 runs. But returning from a forced-break due to the pandemic this season, these old warhorses look rusty against the young sides of Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and others.
CSK vs SRH Live : Top-order out of form, did they make mistake by not grooming young guns ?
More than the age, concern is form of these veterans.
Out of the playing 11 which CSK have played in the first three matches, it had batsmen mostly in their 30s. The likes of Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav have all failed to produce a meaningful performance. The total score of trio Watson, Vijay and Dhoni is 175 runs which is just two runs more than that of Faf du Plessis who has 173 runs to his credit.
The out of form top-order is a big concern for CSK and if this continues there 2020 IPL season might be over even before beginning.
The bigger question to ask is has MS Dhoni & CSK missed the trick by not grooming the talent enough ? RCB has got Devdutt, KKR has Shubman Gill, Delhi Capitals has Prithvi Shaw, Rajasthan Royals invested on Sanju Samson.
CSK’s overthrust on experience vis a vis youth is biting them hard.
CSK vs SRH Live : Some Silver lining in Ambati Rayudu’s comeback
While there are many problems in CSK camp this season, the only silver lining for them is the return of Ambati Rayudu. The Indian batsman was the key player in CSK’s win against Mumbai Indians, and is back after missing the first two games due to a hamstring injury and will be a vital player for MS Dhoni’s side. CSK can slot him either at number 3 or 4 with Faf du Plessis in next or they can also open with him. Murali Vijay or Ruturaj Gaikwad likely move up the order
Probable XI: Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Piyush Chawla, Josh Hazlewood/Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar
