Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) Lungi Ngidi, who returned the figures of 3/38 in the IPL 2020 opener against Mumbai Indians, conceded 30 runs off the last over of the innings during the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday. This is the joint most expensive final over of the tournament’s history.
England all-rounder Jofra Archer was on the field and he smashed back-to-back four sixes to Ngidi, out of which two were no balls. The pacer then bowled a wide delivery. This meant Ngidi gave away 27 runs from the first two legal deliveries.
However, after getting smashed on the first two legal deliveries of the over, Ngidi managed to restrict the batsmen from hitting big shots. But, Rajasthan Royals still managed to take away 30 runs off the final over which took their total to 216 in the allotted 20 overs as Archer smashed unbeaten 28 off just 8 balls.
Here’s how the last over of RR’s innings turned out:
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: SIX! Clean hit from Archer, picked the slower ball early, extended his arms and lifted it high and over long-off for a maximum.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: SIX! Back-to-back sixes – Archer expects Ngidi to go short and he’s quick to swivel across, gets a lovely connection on the pull and sends the ball soaring over square leg – went out of the ground as well.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: No ball! SIX! a hat-trick of sixes, length ball at the stumps, Archer clears his front leg and thwacks it flat and hard, wide of long-on for a maximum – worse, Ngidi has overstepped by a massive margin.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: No ball! SIX, Four sixes on the trot – A stunning cameo from Archer – length ball at the stumps, Archer backs away and lifts it high and over long-off.. and the third umpire decides that the front-foot is just over, called as a no-ball.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: Wide! Ngidi attempts the slower ball, but it’s well wide of off and called by the umpire
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: No run! a dot ball from Ngidi – slower short ball outside off, Archer shuffled across on the pull and is beaten, bounces on its way to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: 1 run, short and following Archer as he backed away, pulled without any timing towards long leg.
Ngidi to Tom Curran: 1 run, another slower short-ball and it’s flat-batted back past the bowler by Tom. Sam scurries across to his right at mid-off and keeps his brother to a single.
Ngidi to Jofra Archer: 1 run, back of a length slower ball outside off, flat-batted towards mid-off and the Royals finish with 216 on the board.
Total runs scored in the over: 30 (6, 6, N6, N6, Wd, 0, 1, 1, 1)
The over turned out to be a nightmare for Ngidi and he turned out expensive returns of 1/54.
The 24-year-old also becomes the player with most expensive over in IPL history along with Chris Jordan and Ashoke Dinda.
Jordan has conceded 30 runs recently while playing for Kings XI Punjab in their IPL 2020 opening game against Delhi Capitals on Monday. The Barbadian-born English cricketer was hammered by Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.
Talking about Dinda, the pacer gave away 30 runs vs Mumbai Indians while playing for Rising Pune Supergiants during IPL 2017. MI all-rounder Hardik Pandya alone hit Dinda for 30.
Meanwhile, RR defeated CSK by 16 runs to go on top of the IPL 2020 points table.
