MI top the standings due to better net run-rate, while DC are placed second and RCB are placed third.
These three teams are the front-runners to book spots in the playoffs and with a good lead and better form than other teams, DC, MI and RCB would fancy their chances to remain in the upper half of the points table and make it to the knockout round.
Fourth on the points table are Kolkata Knight Riders who have won four out of their seven games and have 8 points in their kitty. Given the current scenario, KKR are very much in the race to make it to the business end of the tournament and they need to win at least 4 off their remaining 7 games to qualify for the playoffs. They can also gain advantage if any of the top three teams fail to continue their good form and winning streak.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are fifth in the points tally having won three games so far. With six points in their bag, SRH need to be consistent and start winning games if they aim to qualify for the playoffs. Like KKR, Hyderabad need to win a minimum four of their remaining seven games in a bid to make it to the knockouts.
Rajasthan Royals who have won three of their seven games, are currently at sixth spot in the IPL 2020 points table. They have a net run rate of -0.872 which make things more difficult for them. Other than winning at least five of their remaining seven games, RR need to hope that SRH and KKR falter in the business end of the tournament, so that they can overtake them in the tally.
Probably the biggest shocker of the season is three times champions Chennai Super Kings lying at the seventh spot with just two wins from seven games and four points in their kitty. It can be the first time that CSK fail to make it to playoffs in the history of IPL and to avoid that they will have to climb a mountain – win at least 5 of their remaining 7 games and that too with a decent run rate. Even if they overcome this huge challenge, Chennai will have pray that RR, SRH and KKR go into a losing streak and drop points.
At the bottom of the points table are Kings XI Punjab who had a nightmarish outing in the first half of the tournament. They have won just one game in IPL 2020 so far and have claimed only two points till now. Practically, their race to make it to playoffs is over.
However, if they still wish to turn things around then they really need to pull up their socks. KXIP can’t afford to lose any more games and the minimum that they will have to do is to win six of their remaining seven games and hope that teams above them suffer the same fate which they themselves suffered in the first half of IPL 2020.
