It was a ‘Super Sunday’ in the Indian Premier League 2020 as it witnessed three Super Overs in a day – an event which occurred for the first time in the history of IPL.
It was a day of double-header and both the games, KKR vs SRH and MI vs KXIP were decided in their respective Super Overs. Interestingly, prior to Sunday, there wasn’t a single day in IPL history which witnessed more than one Super Over, but it all changed on October 18.
Here’s how things panned out on ‘Super Sunday’:
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL 2020 match no. 35)
Chasing a 164-run target, SRH needed 18 runs to win in the last over and the team’s captain David Warner took full advantage of KKR all-rounder Andre Russell bowling with a short run-up due to an injury.
After starting with a no-ball, Russell conceded three consecutive boundaries as Warner played sensibly to draw the match.
SUPER OVER (First of the day)
With bowling figures of 4-0-15-3, Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers for KKR in his first IPL 2020 match and the Kiwi pacer didn’t disappoint as he dismissed Warner and Abdul Samad in the Super Over, leaving KKR with only a three run-target to chase.
Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab (IPL 2020 match no. 35)
Chasing a 177-run target against MI, KXIP skipper KL Rahul smashed a scintillating 51-ball 77 to take his team on the brink of a successful chase but team-mates Deepak Hooda and Jordan could only level the scores at 176 for six in the stipulated 20 overs.
SUPER OVER (Second of the day)
Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul in the first Super Over of the match to leave MI with a six-run target.
However, Mohammed Shami bowled an equally incredible over as KXIP defended the five runs to take the match to a second Super Over of the match.
SUPER OVER (Third of the day)
Kieron Pollard helped MI score 11 for one in the second Super Over bowled by Chris Jordan after both the teams ended at the same score in the first Super Over.
Chris Gayle then hit the first ball bowled by Trent Boult for a six before Mayank Agarwal cracked successive fours as KXIP notched up an incredible win to keep their IPL play-off hopes alive.
