Millions of Jio TV customers will not be able to enjoy the free live streaming of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) starting on September19th. Reportedly, the deal renewal between IPL streaming partner Hotstar and Jio TV could not be reached for the IPL 2020.
According to a report by e4M, both Hotstar and JioTV could not reach an agreement on the IPL deal and the same has been called off now.
“In March negotiations regarding streaming of live IPL matches on Jio TV through Hotstar were still on, but the parties had not come to an agreement. The deal is supposedly off now. However, you would not know until last minute, anything can happen,” said the expert who did not wish to be quoted.

The IPL in 2019 delivered phenomenal numbers on digital streaming on Hotstar. The streaming platform had claimed that they have crossed 300Mn viewers and registered a 74% increase in watch time in comparison to IPL 2018 edition. Not only this, the finals of IPL 2019 between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai created a record of sorts as it delivered 18.6 million concurrent users.
According to the industry experts most of this reach came on the back of Hotstar’s back to back agreement with JioTV. It is worth noting that though Hotstar was charging its customers after 5minutes of free viewing time, JioTV allowed free IPL streaming to its subscribers.
According to the E4m report, Industry experts believe with JioTV out of the mix of things, the reach of IPL 2020 will get severely impacted.
“Because there is no deal with Jio this year, the reach will come down for Hotstar. While there would be a definite push given by Hotstar for their subscription numbers and many would have got added to the platform during this COVID situation, it will still definitely be nowhere near what they would have got from the Jio tie up,” said Gopa Kumar COO, Isobar India.
According to the industry sources –
– Hotstar claims to have around 9-10 million subscriptions at present.
– They are targeting 75-200 million eye balls for IPL 2020.
– 75% of this will come from the first five-minute viewers which are non-paying viewers.
– In order to reach the number of 175 million eye balls, Hotstar will have to grow their base to about 40-50 million subscribers this year.
The fall in reach will also impact the advertising for the official IPL 2020 streaming partner. According to few reports, Hotstar clocked in the range of 300Cr during the IPL 2019 advertising. The internal targets for this year’s IPL was slated to be 30-35% higher than the last year numbers. But with Covid19 impact and also now JioTV – Hotstar feed sharing deal in limbo, the revenues according to the key industry players will take a hit.
InsideSport tried reaching out to Star India & Disney+ Hotstar for its official take on the development but did not get the reply from both.
