Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Shubman Gill once again showed why he has been termed as ‘next big thing’ time and again as on Saturday, the youngster smashed unbeaten half-century to guide KKR to 7-wickets victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Indian Premier League 2020.
Gill hit 70 off 62 balls which included 5 fours and 2 sixes to help Kolkata chase down the modest 145-runs target in just 18 overs. The 21-year-old came out to open for KKR and remained on the crease till the very last ball of the game thus making sure that his team cross the finishing line without any difficulties.
It was a very mature innings by Shubman after KKR lost early wickets during their chase. The opener was also presented with ‘Man of the match’ award for his stupendous display.
Meanwhile, former England great Kevin Pietersen lauded the youngster for his calm and composed innings and said that ‘he should be the captain of KKR’.

Interestingly, KP wasn’t alone as many other former cricketers and fans were impressed with Gill’s composure and they praised the batsman on Twitter.

It is such a pleasure watching Shubman Gill bat. Such wonderful poise and balance. The added bonus tonight was seeing Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti on the field together again, that’s a real treat.

Gill was one of the star performers for the Prithvi Shaw-led India U-19 in their triumphant World Cup campaign in early 2018, and it earned him a place in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp. Since then, the right-hander has impressed one and all with 563 runs in 29 matches at an average of 35.18 along with five half-centuries.
In addition, Gill was the Emerging Player of the Year during last year’s IPL edition.
Meanwhile, the victory against SRH was KKR’s first in IPL 2020 and it saw them move to fifth spot on the IPL 2020 points table.
