Had it not been for Chris Gayle’s sickness, Glenn Maxwell most would likely have been benched against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, what became the Universe Boss’ loss, was the Australian batsman’s gain. He got a place in the playing XI. But it was the same story all over again. Maxwell departed for mere seven runs in KXIP’s 202-runs chasing cause.
As Kings XI Punjab now gets ready to play its first-day match on Saturday against Kolkata Knight Riders, the big question is “Will they finally bench IPL’s costliest flop?”
KXIP vs KKR: Glenn Maxwell fails to justify his Rs 10.75cr price tag
Maxwell was bought for Rs 10.75 cr by XIP from Delhi Capitals. He has been given the role to lead KXIP’s middle-order. However, in the six matches played, he has scored just 48 runs. To add to the woes, he has failed to produce effective results with the ball too. In the 42 balls bowled, Maxi has chipped just one wicket which came in KXIP’s opening game against Delhi Capitals.
He along with others in the middle order has failed to give any momentum to the solid starts given by Rahul & Agarwal. In the field too, Maxwell has not lived up to his high standards.
IPL 2020: Is he the biggest and costliest flop in IPL history?
Maxwell made his IPL debut in 2012 for Delhi Daredevils. However, the 2014 edition with KXIP was the breakout season for the Australian batsman. In 16 matches played, he amassed a total of 552-runs with four fifties. However, in the following two seasons he managed to score just 145 and 178 runs respectively. He did give a ray of hope in 2017, hitting over 300 runs in 14 matches, but since then has struggled to make an impact in IPL. While in 2018, he hit just 169 runs, Maxwell decided to give the last season a miss to make a comeback in Australia’s Test team.
Given his IPL performance, Maxwell is one of the least ‘value for money buy’ amongst the biggies of IPL. In his eight years IPL career, the all-rounder has raked a whopping Rs 49.17 Crore salary from the league. However, he has scored just 1,438 runs with six 50s, and no hundred. He is currently ranked at 109 in InsideSport Moneyball Value for Money Rank.
SRH vs KXIP: Who comes in, if Maxwell goes out?
If Chris Gayle, who is currently suffering from food poisoning gets fit, it is most likely that he will be included in the playing XI with Maxwell benched.
Fans are eagerly waiting for the Gayle-show in IPL 13th season. The Universe Boss has on many occasions proved that age is just a number. In 2019 alone, he amassed 490 runs and was amongst the top run-getters and second-highest for KXIP behind Rahul. Bringing him back would to some extended solve their middle-order conundrum.
With Gayle opening, KL Rahul or Mayank Agarwal can play as No.2 and 3 according to the situation. Nicholas Pooran can then be used as a floater for No.4 and 5 position switching it with Karun Nair. The strategy could help them stabilize the batting order and also give it some depth. Given the size of some grounds in UAE, Gayle could prove to be a game-changer for KXIP.
However, not much is known about Gayle’s health and until then KXIP might most likely put their hopes on Maxwell to help them resurrect.
