The match was earlier scheduled to be held on March 25, three days before the IPL 2020 opener between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on March 29. However, the game has now been deferred and will take place after the final, which will also be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 24.

IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed that the All Stars game will now be played after the final.

The date and venue have not yet been finalised yet. The two teams will be decided on the basis of the players performance in the IPL. “We will see the performance of the players and on that basis, the two teams will be selected,” said Patel.

The decision to postpone the game was taken during the IPL Governing Council on January 27. A selection committee was also formed to pick the two teams. The meeting was attended by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal.

During the meeting, Mumbai was picked to host the All-Stars game on March 25, considering that the IPL gets underway on March 29 with reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) taking on last season’s runner-up Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in the tournament opener.

However, the BCCI realised it did not have enough time to get various things in place. The availability of players was another concern.

The IPL 2020 will start a mere 10 days following the conclusion of the three-ODI series between India and South Africa on March 18 in Kolkata.

Immediately after the ODIs against South Africa, five Indian players are set to travel to Bangladesh to participate in two T20Is between an Asian XI and a World XI, organised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
