The Indian Premier League clash between Rajasthan Royals & Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah on Tuesday will be remembered for a unique record. By hitting 33 sixes in the match RR & CSK game equalled the record of most number of sixes in an IPL T20 Match.
CSK is used to such milestones. Earlier in 2018, there were 33 sixes smashed in the fixture against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the same edition, CSK’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders had witnessed 31 sixes.
Sanju Samson smashed nine of them today, followed by Steve Smith (4), Jofra Archer (4), Shane Watson (4), Faf du Plessis (7), Sam Curran (2) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (3).

IPL 2020 RR vs CSK : Sanju Samson, Archer takes CSK bowlers to cleaners, hits them for 17 sixes
Rajasthan Royals batsman was on a six hitting spree against CSK. Such was the carnage by the Royals that they ended up hitting 17 sixes to set score of 216 in their allotted 20 overs.
Sanju Samson played a special knock of 74 in mere 32 balls laced with 9 towering sixes.
Steve Smith wasn’t far behind as he scored 69 off 47 balls with 4 six hits. Smith and Samson added wonderful 121 for the 2nd wicket.
Samson brought up his half-century in just 19 balls against Chennai Super Kings with 6 towering sixes and a sole boundary after MS Dhoni won the toss and put RR in to bat first.
His previous best was a 24-ball fifty for Delhi Capitals against the Gujarat Lions at the Feroz Shah Kotla on May 4, 2017.
Samson’s blistering knock helped Rajasthan post 96 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 8 overs.
Overall, Samson’s 19-ball effort is the joint-sixth fastest in IPL history along with Chris Lynn, KL Rahul, Harbhajan Singh, Owais Shah, David Miller, Andre Russell and Robin Uthappa.
This is also the joint-2nd fastest half-century for the Royals after Jos Buttler’s 18-ball effort against Delhi Capitals last season. Owais Shah had also hit a 19-ball 50 for RR against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2012.
Rahul holds the IPL record for the fastest fifty off 14 balls, a feat he achieved in a game against Delhi Capitals at the IS Bindra stadium in Mohali on April 8, 2018.
Samson’s fifty was his 11th in the IPL. He has 2 hundreds to his name and showed glimpses of his past form against CSK, taking a liking towards leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who got honked for 6 sixes by the right-hander.
Samson was eventually dismissed for 74 off 32 balls by Lungi Ngidi in the 12th over.
Later CSK also matched the Royals in terms of hitting sixes as they ended up with 16 sixes. Du Plessis hit 7, Watson 4, Curran 2 and Dhoni ended the innings with 3 sixes.
