IPL 2020: How has Rohit Sharma-less MI performed?

Mumbai Indians have played three games without their skipper. In his absence, MI veteran Kieron Pollard donned the captain’s hat. Under his captaincy, Mumbai chasing a low total of 114 runs won their first match against Chennai Super. Ishan Kishan was promoted to open with in-form Quinton de Kock.

However, the team could not repeat their performance against Rajasthan Royals. Despite posting a massive total of 195 runs, courtesy of Hardik Pandya’s splendid 21 balls 60. Pollard’s inexperience as a captain became evident when he failed to put pressure on RR after two early wickets in Robin Uthappa and Steve Smith.

Ben Stokes 107 off 60 balls and Sanju Samson’s third fifty of the season kept Royals afloat in IPL’s playoff race.

But the game against RCB showed that MI can deliver without Rohit. The Mumbai-based franchise have the deepest squad in IPL and it became evident on Wednesday. Suryakumar’s rise in absence of the Indian batsman and Bumrah’s in-form, are good news for MI. However, a player like Rohit becomes important during the crunch games like the IPL playoffs.

IPL 2020: Rohit Sharma— The Mumbai Indians captain

Rohit has etched his name as the most successful captain in the IPL with four trophies, the most by anyone in the tournament. Undoubtedly, the most important cog in the Mumbai Indians’ wheel.

A prolific run-getter, the Hitman is one of the most naturally gifted batsmen in the world. When it comes to the shorter format, few can match his striking abilities.

He joined MI in 2011 and has amassed a total of 3,988 runs with the Mumbai-based franchise. He took over the team’s captaincy in 2013, and led the team to their maiden IPL title.

In the same year, he guided the team to the Champions League T20 title. He added another feather to his captain’s hat, when he won the second title and with equalised Chennai Super Kings record of most IPL trophies.

In the four title-winning seasons alone, Rohit scored 1,748 runs out of his 5,158 IPL runs. Furthermore, he has scored 12 fifties at an average of 31.385.

He is an irreplaceable force in the Mumbai Indians squad. Given his experience as a captain, Rohit will be crucial for MI during the eliminators. While not much is known about his fitness, the fact that he is hitting big in the nets is a positive sign. It is likely that MI might opt to rest Rohit for the remaining two matches.
