In the before Virat Kohli-era, fitness was never considered as important as talent. But the mindset changed after Kohli donned the captain’s hat. He started a fitness trend in the Indian dressing room, with youngsters and veterans alike understood its importance. The 30-year-old who adores footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s has on many occasions said “fitness is key to longevity”. And these golden words have stuck with Rajasthan Royals wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson.
Reminiscing a conversation with the Indian captain during a gym session at the camp, he said: “I had asked him (Kohli) about his fitness regime to which he asked me how long do I plan to play cricket,” adding “I told him at least 10 years”.
“He then told me that Sanju you can have all the Kerala food you want after 10 years then, until then give cricket your everything,” he added.
The advice seems to have done wonders.
Samson is having a great season so far. Rajasthan Royals have played two matches in this IPL season, clinching win in both, courtesy of his blitzkrieg. Samson scored 74 off 32 balls against Chennai Super Kings, while knocked 85 off 42 balls in a nail-biting chase against Kings XI Punjab.
He believes that playing in Jaipur and Kerala has helped him ease into the conditions. “Playing at Jaipur & Kerala has helped me to adapt in the UAE weather,” he said during a press conference.
Rajasthan Royals will now face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their third IPL match. Talking about the preparations for the game, Samson said the team has made some changes to the gameplan but overall are ready to face KKR. “Since the Dubai grounds are a bit bigger, we have made changes to the gameplan. Overall we are all set,” he said adding “I am in good mental shape and eager to go full throttle against KKR”.
The match will begin at 7:30 PM.
