Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) lead seamer Navdeep Saini will miss out on the next against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday.Saini split the webbing of his right hand during the match against Chennai Super Kings. Saini suffered the injury while attempting to stop the ball off his own bowling – off the last ball in the 18th over – and left the field.
Speaking to RCB TV, the team’s head physiotherapist Evan Speechly said Saini received stitches immediately and is being monitored. “Saini has split his webbing in the last ball there. He obviously got hit on the thumb on the right hand. He has just split the webbing over there. Fortunately, we had a good hand surgeon, he stitched up nicely. We are unsure about his availability” said Speechly.
Virat Kohli had a similar injury in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016. Kohli had received eight stitches on his right hand, but continued to play. He scored an unbeaten 75 in the game against Kolkata and followed it up with a 50-ball 113 in the next game against Kings XI Punjab.
“Virat, four-five years ago, he had it in Kolkata, we managed to stop the bleeding and he smashed a 100 after we got a plastic surgeon who had stitched it,” said Speechly, who added that he isn’t sure of when Saini will be ready to play.
“Unfortunately you cannot compare the two injuries. Some people can manage it and some can’t. It’s also because Saini’s injury is on his bowling hand so it puts a lot of pressure on him so I cannot be sure when he will be good to go. I am hoping that he will be good to play in the next game and the rest of the tournament.”
RCB are currently third on the points table, tied on points (14) with table-toppers Mumbai Indians and the second-placed Delhi Capitals, with the top three teams having played 11 matches each.
Saini, has five wickets to his name in the 11 matches he has played so far, at an economy of 7.95. As Saini is likely to miss out, Umesh Yadav could come in as his replacement.
