The Indian Premier League franchises can breathe easy. The IPL 2020 beginning in UAE from Sep19th will have the presence of South African cricketers. As the South Africa is currently in lockdown with all international flights suspended, doubts were being raised on the participation of 10 South African cricketers in IPL 2020. Because of the same issue, Proteas will not be seen in this year’s Caribbean Premier League starting this week.
But in a welcome move now the South African government has decided to allow few international flights to resume operations sometime
this month. Though the fine details in this regard are yet to be shared by the local authorities but one can safely assume that this will allow South African stars to participate in the IPL 2020.

InsideSport has also learnt from the Chennai Super Kings management that both South African cricketers in their squad Faf du Plessis & SA pacer Lungi Ngidi will reach Dubai by 1st September. Though both the Proteas cricketers will miss the first week of CSK’s camp in Dubai, they will still reach way before the IPL 2020 resumes on 19th Sep. The third CSK cricketer Imran Tahir is currently in Trinidad to participate in CPL 2020 and should also make it on time for IPL 2020.
“We have been constantly in touch with them. They have informed us that they have got permissions to travel from local authorities. All of us including the South African players are working on the logistics. Both Faf and Ngidi should be in Dubai by 1st Sep.”, said official of CSK management.
“NOC’s from our side are given to all cricketers due to play in IPL 2020”, said CSA’s media manager Koketso Gaofetoge
South Africa is currently in LEVEL 1 of Lockdown and many restrictions on aviation are being removed gradually by the government. Domestic and provincial flights have already resumed. International travel is yet to begin but as per the reports coming in from South Africa, Turkish Airways and few others will start flying in and out of South Africa before the end of this month.
Local media has reported that the government is planning to ease a number of restrictions this week, but as per usual, they are remaining tight-lipped on what exactly will change between now and the weekend. Aviation will be the one industry, where most of the restrictions are likely to be scrapped. This should ensure smooth travel of South African cricketers to UAE for IPL 2020.
