The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) has already seen some mouthwatering action in the 1st week itself, and the second week has seemingly begun with the stakes getting higher.
With the batsmen unleashing their willow, the bowlers have not stayed back from trying the best weapon in their arsenal and hurling their fastest deliveries to trouble the batsmen.
Giving a testament of this, Rajasthan Royals (RR’s) Jofra Archer was at his lethal best for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday. He is the only bowler to have crossed the 150 kph mark this season so far. The fastest ball he has bowled so far in this IPL is 152.13 kph while the other deliveries when he clocked beyond measured, 150.82 and 150.75 kph.
In his four-over spell, the right-armer bowled a total of 14 dot balls and conceded just four runs in his first three overs. However, 14 runs came in his last over as he ended with figures of 18/2. Young Shubman Gill (47) and KKR captain Dinesh Karthik were his victims.
In the previous couple of matches, the England fast bowler used quiet a few slow balls and got smacked all over the ground. But against KKR he bowled to his strengths with brute pace, probably making him a tough bowler to hit. But at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Archer started the innings with a fiery over and that remained the template throughout. The over began with 147kph and was followed by 149.9kph, 147.8kph and then close to 150 kmph. Only one run came off the over, setting the tone for Rajasthan.
Interestingly, Jofra Archer has bowled 9 out of the top 10 fastest deliveries in this IPL season thus far. The only other name in the top 10 in this list is of Delhi Capitals’ Anrich Nortje who delivered at the speed of 148.92 in one of the matches.
Navdeep Saini fastest among Indians
Among the Indian bowlers, the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Navdeep Saini has been the fastest. He has impressed a lot with his variations thus far and was instrumental in the team winning the match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the super over. He is at the 13th place at the moment in the fastest ball list having clocked 147.92 kph in one of the three matches he’s played in IPL 2020.
Apart from the above three players, the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) bowler Josh Hazlewood has managed to sneak into the top 20. He delivered at 147.32 kph speed in the only game he played against Delhi Capitals (DC) this season. There could be more players appearing in this list as the tournament goes on. But at the moment, Jofra Archer is leading the way clearly with his fierce pace bowling.
