IPL 2021 – 4 teams likely to have a new captain in IPL 2021: With the culmination of IPL 2020, the anticipation for the upcoming season (IPL 2021) has already begun. Now with reports pouring in regarding a mega auction for IPL 2021, franchises will be looking to revamp their squad for the new edition.
Every team management sweated it out during the auction to arm the franchises with the best of combinations. Moving ahead towards the 14th edition of the tournament, the team owners and support staffs will be trying their best to get their team back on the winning track- if that means changing captains too.
Interestingly, the sword of Damocles apparently hangs over the heads of some of the non-performing skippers. Especially, those who despite long haul have failed to deliver for their IPL franchises.
Franchises like Mumbai Indians (Rohit Sharma), Chennai Super Kings (MS Dhoni), Delhi Capital (Shreyas Iyer), Sunrisers Hyderabad (David Warner) in all likelihood will continue with their leaders in IPL 2021 as well. But balance 4 teams are likely to not only change their line-ups but also their leaders.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Virat Kohli
Much was expected from the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) who had revamped their coaching staff following a league stage exit in 2019. They did qualify for the playoffs after four years but it wasn’t a performance that the fans had expected. At one stage, RCB were also sitting at the top spot but they couldn’t keep that for long.
The Virat Kohli-led side somehow made it to the playoffs and lost the Eliminator to Sunrisers Hyderabad. RCB endured a poor run in the final few matches and were coming into the playoffs after suffering four back-to-back defeats. Despite playing the Eliminator, it wasn’t a season for RCB to remember.
Giving their takes on RCB’s season, former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Sanjay Manjrekar have made calls to remove Kohli as the captain. Though the owners and the team management haven’t given any indication of Kohli’s removal but they may follow the route suggested by Gambhir and others.
3. Kings XI Punjab – KL Rahul
The Punjab based outfit is still finding it precarious to finish on the podium. The squad boasts some of the best in the business in the lucrative squad. Featuring into the finals in 2014 against KKR, Punjab could not cross the winning mark in the high-voltage matches. The KL Rahul-led side could not find the rhythm at the initial stage.
Eventually, Punjab had to bow out from the playoffs race. The team could not plug the dampened holes of the ship resultingly ousting from the marquee event. The franchise won 6 and lost 8 crucial matches creating massive hurdles for them.
It goes without saying that KL Rahul has been a shining light incessantly. The Karnataka-based batsman features at the helm in the highest run-getters list notching 670 runs. However, he has found it hard to take tough calls in the right times as far as last-over deciders are concerned.
Hence, KL Rahul is expected to face the axe as the management gears up to fix the broken pieces of the team. It will be exciting to see whether or not the fearless talisman, who dons the captain’s hat, can change the fate of the Kings XI Punjab.
2. Rajasthan Royals – Steve Smith
The first champions of the T20 extravaganza, Rajasthan Royals are known for weathering storms and turning the tables on their side with their belligerent brand of cricket. Under the leadership of Shane Warne, RR scripted an adorable epilogue for the swanky book called IPL. However, things have not gone in their favour as they continue their title-draught since then.
The pink outfit handed the captain’s responsibility to Steven Smith who could not defy the odds and break into the playoffs in the 13th edition of the delayed competition. Scoring only 311 runs in 14 outings for the team, the Aussie swashbuckler remains under the scanner for his poor decision on the field too.
He handed the ball in the second last over to Jaydev Unadkat in the reverse-clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore. As it turned out, AB De Villiers smashed the fast-seamer for 3 humungous sixes without any mercy. Eventually, he steered his team to victory single-handedly.
Hence, Smith may bear the brunt in the upcoming days as questions seemed to be hovering over his head. Rajasthan Royals bagged the wooden spoon languishing at the bottom of the points table after the end of the league season.
1. Kolkata Knight Riders – Eoin Morgan / Dinesh Kartik
The two-time titleholders have always been a team of greats ever since its inception in 2008. From the likes of Brendon McCullum, Jacques Kallis to Gautam Gambhir and Chris Gayle, the Shah Rukh Khan owned franchise has scripted heroics with their power-packed brand of cricket time and again.
However, the 13th edition of the IPL apparently had nothing much to cherish about for the purple and gold outfit. The squad experienced significant tremors in the mid-season. Dinesh Karthik was removed as captain in middle of the season. Eventually, the world Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan took over the charges – but that also did not deliver desired results for KKR.
KKR could not make it to the playoffs and finished at the fifth position after the end of the league stage. The team won 7 matches and lost as many matches in 14 appearances in the ongoing season.
Under profound scrutiny and criticism, the Kolkata-based outfit will be interested in making a robust change in the team balance along with the captain. It is expected that a new captain may hold the position of responsibility who can sensibly shoulder the emotions of millions of fans.
