IPL 2021: 5 Players who could be featuring in their final season ft. Dhoni, Gayle, De Villiers –The Phase 2 of the IPL 2021 is all set to be played in September after the tournament was postponed after an outbreak of coronavirus. The IPL is a key part of the Indian cricket calendar with the T20 World Cup to follow, the tournament will have renewed sense of importance for both Indian and foreign stars. And while a host of players will be contending for places in the mega tournament, some of them are looking for a final “Last Dance” before they call curtains on their career. Insidesport.co looks at players who could be playing their final IPL when Phase 2 kicks off in September.
1 – MS Dhoni
The Chennai Super Kings skipper could be donning the famed yellow jersey for the final time during the IPL 2021 Phase 2. While speculation regarding Dhoni’s future persisted after last season, they have become more pronounced this year, especially considering his waning prowess with the bat and the mega auctions ahead of IPL 2022. While CSK remain keen on having their captain on board, it could finally mark a farewell for the Captain Cool, a year after his international retirement.
2 – Robin Uthappa
Another Indian wicket-keeper batsman from Chennai Suoer Kings, Robin Uthappa has seen his stocks fall drastically in the last few seasons of the tournament. While the three-time champions signed him from Rajasthan Royals, Uthappa did not play a single game in IPL 2021, and his stint in the league looks very much over with the abundance of young talents coming through.
3 – Chris Gayle
at 41, Chris Gayle still remains one of the deadliest batsmen in the sport and Kings XI Punjab have benefited from the veteran’s experience and skills since he was snapped up by the franchise. The Universe Boss could very well be looking at a Last Dance at the T20 World Cup this year, and the IPL 2021 could be his final hurrah in India.
4 – Harbhajan Singh
Like Gayle, Harbhajan Singh at 41 has shown that he still retains his skills through which he broke into the Indian side two decades ago. Now part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Singh has featured sporadically with Varun Chakravarthy leading the attack, and the IPL 2021 very much looks like his final season in the competition.
5 – AB de Villiers
The thought of AB de Villiers not lining up for Royal Challengers Bangalore looks frightening and unlikely, but the South African’s career remains on its last legs. At 37, De Villiers has shown no signs of slowing down and starred in the Phase of IPL 2021 but could look to move on after the end of the season especially with the mega auctions on the horizon. The South African will be in his 40s by the time the next mega auction rolls into town, and Mr.360 will look to end his career on a high.
