IPL 2021: Andre Russell recalls horrific dismissal by Rashid Khan in 2018, says ‘Was in shower with my clothes and shoes on’ – Kolkata Knight Riders’ explosive batsman Andre Russell is certainly one of the best all-rounders in the league but even he went through a rough phase in IPL 2018. Recalling the qualifiers in the IPL 2018, Andre Russell said that he was in the shower with his clothes and shoes on after being dismissed by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Rashid Khan.
Dinesh Karthik-led KKR lost the second qualifier against SRH at Eden Gardens and missed out on IPL final berth.
IPL 2021: “When I got out to Rashid Khan, I got back inside and went in to shower with my cricket clothes on. My shoes and everything was wet. I was just there with the water running all over me because (the loss meant) it was basically the last game (of the season),” Andre Russell said.
IPL 2021: Match Story: KKR was chasing 175 in the second qualifier and was well-posed at 93/2 but things went south for Kolkata as Chris Lynn and Dinesh was dismissed in quick succession. Russell had the responsibility to win the game for KKR with 57 runs needed off 33 balls. However, the West Indian could not finish the game as he was dismissed for 3 runs off 7 balls by Rashid. Russell was dismissed by Rashid on the fourth ball of his last over. The leg spinner bowled a googly and Russell could not pick it, he went for a shot and edged it to the first slip.
“I didn’t get out being Dre Russ. I started to overthink the game. That was actually a ball I could have put away, and that’s the moment where I knew I had messed up. If I was still batting at the back end, we would have won comfortably,” Andre Russell recalled.
IPL 2021: “I was just disappointed with myself. That’s why I went into the shower with everything wet. I was happy that no one saw me that way because it was embarrassing. People would have been like – ‘Are you losing it?’ I realised (from that incident that) if a bowler feels you are scared to lift your bat, they are gonna be all over you. You have to back off a bowler by playing shots sometimes,” Andre Russell added.
SRH won that match and set a date with Chennai Super Kings in the final of IPL 2018. However, Kane Williamson’s side failed to beat CSK again and MS Dhoni won his third IPL title as a captain.
