IPL 2021 auction: It is the penultimate day before the IPL 2021 auction. This will not be a mega auction, which means the franchises on the February 18 event will more or less look to fill in the gaps. Each team will have a ‘Chanakya’ who will make the final selection call for the auction. InsideSport brings you the one key person each from CSK, RCB, MI, KKR, SRH, DC, KXIP and RR franchises who has the final authority.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Chanakya: MS Dhoni
CSK finished in IPL 2020 with a seventh-place finish, their lowest in the tournament’s history. They have just one overseas slot left, the three-time champions will look for a power-hitting batsman who can fill in the void left by now-retired Shane Watson and also act as a bowler. Glenn Maxwell and Moeen Ali are the top two who tick all the boxes. With two options, Dhoni will take the final call on who will best suit the yellow army.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) Chanakya: Kumar Sangakkara
Rajasthan released Steve Smith ahead of the IPL auction, handing over the captaincy hat to Sanju Samson. The inaugural IPL champions also brought in cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara as the new director of cricket. Given his experience, the former Sri Lanka batsman will be a key decision-maker as Rajasthan look to address balance in both the batting and bowling department.

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) Overseas slots left: 5
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) Chanakya: Anil Kumble
With over Rs 53 crores in the kitty, KXIP will bully the market on February 18. Coached by Anil Kumble, Punjab Kings were a bit unlucky not to at least make the playoffs in IPL 2020. They boast one of the strongest Indian batting cores but they lack overseas batting and bowling to ensure proper balance. It will be interesting to see who Kumble picks as a replacement for Maxwell and Sheldon Cottrel.
Current first XI: 1 KL Rahul, 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Chris Gayle, 4 Nicholas Pooran, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Chris Jordan, 8 M Ashwin, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Ravi Bishnoi, 11 Arshdeep Singh.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)Slots left: 8
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Overseas slots left: 2
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Chanakya: Brendon McCullum
There is not much Kolkata need to address, given the balance they have in their present squad. However, they would still pray for a healthy season for Andre Russell. KKR will go into the auction with the joint-lowest purse and will need to be very specific with their pickings. They might look for a backup for their senior player Dinesh Karthik. Syed Mushtaq Ali’s fourth-highest run-getter Avi Barot. The Gujarat batsman scored a total of 283 runs from five games at an impressive strike rate of 184.96.
Retained Players: Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell, Dinesh Karthik, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Nitish Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Rinku Singh, Sandeep Warrier, Shivam Mavi, Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Rahul Tripathi, Varun Chakravarthy, Tim Seifert

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Slots left: 11
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Overseas slots left: 3
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Chanakya: Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli’s RCB opted for a major shake-up to their squad despite qualifying for the playoffs. Kohli will look for someone dynamic who can help the team overcome the reliance on his and AB de Villiers’ batting. A backup Indian wicketkeeper-batsman would be a good choice as Parthiv Patel has now retired. Mohammed Azharudeen will give them the batting depth needed and will allow them to play a foreign allrounder in the middle.
Retained Players: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Devdutt Padikkal, Md. Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Joshua Phillipe, Pavan Deshpande, Shahbaz Ahmed, Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson
Possible Targets: Glenn Maxwell, Shakib Al Hasan, Steve Smith, Daniel Christian, Chris Morris, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Kyle Jamieson, Mustafizur Rahman, Shahrukh Khan, Shivam Dube, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Sheldon Jackson, Avi Barot, Vishnu Solanki
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): Purse, Slots left, Overseas slots left, Chanakya, Retained Players, Possible Targets
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Purse: INR 10.75 cr
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Slots left: 3
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Overseas slots left: 1
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) Must sign: David Warner
After another playoff exit, SRH need a little reinforcement from their squad. But it will be tough given their Rs 10.75 kitty. Death overs have been a big concern for SRH. Over the last three seasons, they have managed at 8.89, 9.62 and 8.96 and have lost 40+ wickets each time. They can look for a pacer like Shivam Dube, given his batting prowess in the lower-order.
Delhi Capitals (DC): Purse, Slots left, Overseas slots left, Chanakya, Retained Players, Possible Targets
Delhi Capitals (DC) Purse: INR 13.40 cr
Delhi Capitals (DC) Slots left: 8
Delhi Capitals (DC) Overseas slots left: 3
Delhi Capitals (DC) Must sign: Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting has been one of the brightest students of the sport, and DC would like to make the most of his judgement at the auction. The Capitals need a backup for Rishabh Pant and a possible cover for Marcus Stoinis as an allrounder. Ponting retained DC’s core players and had mostly released the fringe players. They might also look for an overseas pacer, given the unavailability concerns over their two key fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje.
Current first XI: 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Marcus Stoinis, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Ishant Sharma.
Potential picks: Chris Morris, Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Christian, Shivam Dube
Mumbai Indians (MI): Purse, Slots left, Overseas slots left, Chanakya, Retained Players, Possible Targets
Mumbai Indians (MI) Purse: INR 15.35 cr
Mumbai Indians (MI) Slots left: 7
Mumbai Indians (MI) Overseas slots left: 4
Mumbai Indians (MI) Chanakya: Rohit Sharma
There is not much Rohit Sharma will want at the auction, given they have the strongest squad on paper. However, they would want to look into a cover for Krunal Pandya whose batting has dwindled over the last two seasons and his spin pair Rahul Chahar has not been very effective either. Hence Sharma would definitely want a spinner in the faction. Also, they would want a backup for their overseas allrounder Kieron Pollard.
Retained Players: Rohit Sharma, Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Dhawal Kulkarni, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Quinton de Kock, Rahul Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Mohsin Khan
Possible Targets: Piyush Chawla, Jhye Richardson, Daniel Christian, Moeen Ali
