IPL 2021 Venue: With just a month left ahead of the IPL 2021, BCCI is still unsure about the venues for the 14th edition of the league. The biggest issue for BCCI at this stage is whether Mumbai Indians home city Mumbai can host the IPL 2021 or not. In order to get assurance from the Maharashtra government, BCCI delegation met NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Thursday according to the reports.
Amid rising cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra, a meeting was conducted by the IPL delegation and the NCP Leader. IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, BCCI acting CEO Hemang Amin and two Mumbai Cricket Association officials were part of the discussion. At the meeting, the former BCCI President Pawar assured the officials that the Maharashtra government would provide all possible support to host the IPL 2021 in the city.
The meeting comes as the state is witnessing a second wave of coronavirus and the government has imposed restrictions on public movements.
As reported by InsideSport.co earlier, BCCI has shortlisted Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai as likely hosts for IPL 2021.
BCCI concerned with cases growing in Maharashtra
Last week, the three-match upcoming ODI series between India and England in Pune was given a nod by the Maharashtra government. The matches will be held on March 23, 26 and 28. No crowds will be allowed as the COVID-19 cases saw a record spike last week in the state.
The discussion on allowing spectators at the stadium was also discussed at the meeting. It is believed that like Ahmedabad only 50 per cent crowds will be allowed if the government gives approval to host IPL games in Mumbai.
When will IPL 2021 schedule, dates be announced?
IPL 2021 – IPL GC Meeting: According to IPL Chairman, the meeting will be conducted shortly and all issues related to schedule, dates and franchise concerned will be discussed and finalized at the meeting.
“Date for IPL governing council meeting has not been finalised yet. It could be in person or may be through video. It’s yet to be finalised. We will let you know. But it will be held very shortly. All the concerns of the franchisee regarding the venues and the itinerary will be addressed during the agenda of the meeting,” IPL Governing Council Chairman Brijesh Patel told Inside News over the phone.
IPL Chairman said that only the Governing Council was authorised to come out with a final list of venues and everything will be considered before arriving at a decision during the meeting. “There is no point in speculating about the venues. All decisions are taken only during the meeting. All I can say is nothing on venues has been decided as yet and it will only be finalised after consultation with and listening to the concerns of the franchisees. We are adopting a wait and watch policy as of now.”
IPL sources indicated that the meeting could be held shortly after the completion of the fourth Test match and a final decision on whether it will be physically attended by members or be held through video conference will also be taken soon.
