IPL 2021: As COVID-19 crisis rattles India and also the IPL 2021, two Bangladeshi players in the tournament — Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman — might return early before it concludes on May 30. As per the new quarantine rule imposed by the Bangladesh health ministry, people returning from India and South Africa will have to undergo mandatory 14-day quarantine with effect from May 1. It means that the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder and Rajasthan Royals bowler will need to return early to be available for Bangladesh’s upcoming matches.
As per Nizamuddin Chowdhury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board chief, they had sought relaxation to the rules for cricketers and got so. But with the second wave of the novel Coronavirus more intense, BCB will now need special relaxation from the Directorate General of Health Services.
IPL 2021: “We have asked them (Shakib and Mustafizur) to let us know what is their plan for the next 15 days while we have also asked the health ministry to know what kind of quarantine protocol the two players will need to follow,” BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told Cricbuzz on Monday.
Earlier, Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan were expected to join the Bangladesh side on May 19 and follow 3-day quarantine ahead of the 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, slated to begin on May 23. But with the new guidelines, both Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman will now need to return early.
IPL 2021: “If the health ministry suggests that they will have to follow seven or 14 days of quarantine, they will have to return earlier than scheduled from IPL. But before that, we have to know what rules will be in place for them. We are bound by the Bangladesh Government rules, and will take decisions according to the guideline provided by the government,” Nizamuddin Chowdhury said.
It comes as a big blow for both Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals as they will be missing two reliable players sooner than expected. Especially for RR, the crisis deepens after several overseas players including Andrew Tye and Ben Stokes have had to withdraw for different reasons apart from an injury crisis. Mustafizur has done well for RR in the IPL 2021 while Shakib Al Hasan was expected to play further part in KKR in later part of the tournament.
Apart from the two players, Bangladesh Cricket Board is also in touch with the government for any relaxation on South Africa COVID-19 guidelines. Bangladesh’s head coach Russell Domingo and fielding coach Ryan Cook were to travel to South Africa and rejoin the squad ahead of the home series against Sri Lanka.
