David Warner had a forgetful IPL 2021 Phase 1 as his team SRH not only slid to the bottom of the points table but also replaced him as the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise. Kane Williamson took over from Warner in the penultimate match of IPL 2021 (SRH vs RR). The season was suspended due to COVID-19 cases among players, staffs of 4 franchises.

Williamson had previous experience of leading SRH in IPL 2018 but it was David Warner who led them to their maiden IPL triumph in IPL 2016.
