IPL 2021 – MS Dhoni Deputy? Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has assembled in Mumbai’s Oberoi Trident Hotel to start their journey in IPL 2021. MS Dhoni has arrived and so are team’s other big names Ravindra Jadeja & Suresh Raina. All uncertainty around their fitness and participation is laid to rest in the last 24 hours and both have joined CSK camp in Mumbai. Now the big question doing the rounds – who should be deputy to Dhoni this IPL? Should it be Raina or should the vice-captaincy responsibility be given to Jadeja?

According to CSK management they still are undecided on this. CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanath told Cricbuzz that a call will be made closer to the tournament and that Raina was not yet named for the position. “We’ll name the vice-captain closer to the tournament,” Viswanathan said.

Raina has been Dhoni’s understudy since season 1. But Raina leaving the CSK camp in the UAE days before IPL 2020 and not playing any international match since 2018 meant his chances of retaining Dhoni’s deputy position is secure.

On the other hand, Jadeja has been one of the prolific contributors to CSK in past few years. But no one knows if he has completely recovered from his thumb injury or not? Jadeja hasn’t featured in any match since India’s Australia tour.

After Raina left the CSK camp in Dubai days before IPL 2020, citing personal reasons, the franchise did not name a vice-captain for the entire campaign. Dhoni continued to lead the team even though the team finished seventh in an eight-team tournament, missing out on the playoffs for the first time in 13 editions.

Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja stats for CSK:

Suresh Raina Matches Runs Highest score Batting Avg 100/50 Batting SR Wickets

Ravindra Jadeja
116 1097 50 25.4 0/1 126.47 87

Vice-Captaincy debate aside, CSK management is happy to get both Raina and Jadeja back in the squad.

“It’s good to have our bunch in place. Both Raina, Jadeja are here – we are hoping for a great season”, said Viswanathan.

Raina last played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for UP and scored a 50-ball 56 in their opening match against Punjab. As for Jadeja. He will race against time to regain match-fitness after being sidelined for nearly four months following the surgery.

Both the players have joined the team in Mumbai and are in seven-day quarantine at a hotel. “He looks in good shape and we are hopeful he will be available from the first game,” Viswanathan said of Jadeja.

All Indian players have already joined the team in Mumbai while the foreign players are expected to assemble in the coming days. CSK will face Delhi Capitals on April 10 to kick off their campaign.
