IPL 2021: Devdutt Padikkal says, ‘Coming out of COVID definitely was a big challenge’ after a match-winning ton- Royal Challengers Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a match-winning century on Thursday, stressed that he tries to keep things simple. The promising youngster added that recovering out of COVID was a big challenge for him.
“To be honest, I only look to keep things simple ever since the last two seasons. I have not tried to do anything different or special. I have just tried to stick to my processes every game. Try to stay as consistent as possible and thankfully I’ve been able to do that. And, coming out of COVID definitely was a big challenge and I was really happy that I could contribute to the team from the second game. So, as long as I am contributing and the team is winning. That’s all that matters,” Padikkal said.
Padikkal further added that team is more important than personal landmarks.
“To be honest, I was just looking to finish the game off and what mattered the most was to win as early as possible. When I was out there, I wasn’t thinking about my hundred and want to make sure that we won the game. And that’s what I told Virat as well. I asked him to go for it because for me it was more important to won the game,” he added.
The left-handed batsman stressed that it was a good deck to bat.
“Definitely not, It was a really good wicket and we got off to a really good start and from there I just wanted to carry on. The Chennai and Mumbai wicket is completely different and the roles that we play are completely different on such wickets. So it was just purely on the match today and I was just happy that I was able to do that today,” Padikkal stressed.
He felt that the partnership between him and Virat Kohli played a key role in the victory.
“We were really complimenting each other while during the powerplay and throughout the inning and we were rotating the strike well. So that was really important and as we went on, we got better and better and striking the ball clean. So we were just trying to make sure that we batted as long as possible and you know the team won.”
On hitting plenty of boundaries at a good strike rate which was missing during the last IPL season, Padikkal said, “It’s about the situation of the game and I always have a particular role to play and I like to do that as best as possible. Sometimes, yes it can get challenging in the middle-overs. As you know, it’s not easy to hit the boundaries all the time. So it was a really good wicket and we were having a good partnership together and we were complimenting each other well. In that situation, it was easier to hit those boundaries. We were always rotating the strike and that’s why I just clicked today.”
