The season opener will kick off between RCB vs MI in Chennai on April 9. The last year’s tournament was postponed, held in UAE in wake of a spike in COVID-19 cases. This year the tournament will be held in India across six cities, preparations for the same have already begun. The IPL 2021 season in India will also mark the comeback of few big players from India, overseas. They are Suresh Raina (CSK), Cheteshwar Pujara (CSK), Harbhajan Singh (KKR), Shakib Al Hasan (KKR), Mustafizur Rahman (RR).
Suresh Raina (Chennai Super Kings)
One of the top run-scorers in the IPL, Suresh Raina had pulled out of IPL 2020 due to personal reasons. He has reunited with MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) this year. He has been a pillar of strength of CSK in the middle-order which was evident from the fact that CSK struggled last season. Suresh Raina has scored 5,368 runs in 193 IPL matches and picked 25 wickets.
Harbhajan Singh (Kolkata Knight Riders)
The 40-year-old was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for a base price of Rs 2 crore. He had pulled out of the IPL 2020 due to personal reasons. Harbhajan Singh has got plenty of experience under his belt that can help the KKR strengthen their spin bowling department, especially because Kuldeep Yadav is going through a lean patch. Harbhajan has got staggering figures in IPL with 150 wickets in 160 matches. He is one of the top wicket-takers in the cash-rich league.
Shakib Al Hasan (Kolkata Knight Riders)
The star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will also be making IPL comeback. He was handed a ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the cricketer failed to report a corrupt approach in 2019. He missed competitive cricket and IPL in UAE. He has played 63 matches, scored 746 runs and scalped 28 wickets. He can fulfil the duties of a finisher and take wickets in the slog overs.
Cheteshwar Pujara (Chennai Super Kings)
The most dependable Test batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, was rewarded with a contract by Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021 owing to his match-winning performance for India in Australia. He will be returning to IPL after a long gap of 7 years. He has played for RCB and KKR in the past, but Pujara has not been impressive in his previous outings, managing just 390 runs in 30 matches.
Mustafizur Rahman (Rajasthan Royals)
Bangladesh pace spearhead Mustafizur Rahman is making an IPL comeback after 2 years. He had made headlines in 2016 when he scalped 16 wickets in the season. In Jofra Archer’s absence due to injury, Mustafizur needs to step up for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021 if they are to compete for the title. So far, he has picked 24 wickets in 24 matches in IPL.
