IPL 2021: Royal Challengers Bangalore spinner Yuzvendra Chahal faces Vishwanathan Anand in chess to raise funds for COVID-19 relief

IPL 2021: Not many know that India’s ace white-ball leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is a former chess player, who has represented India at youth levels. But the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spin wizard will have a huge task when he takes on multiple world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand in a charity match to raise funds for COVID-19 relief. Dhanashree Verma Chahal, Yzuvendra’s wife took to Instagram to share the news with fans.

Yuzvendra Chahal will be one of the opponents Viswanathan Anand will face in a series of exhibition matches as part of the initiative named ‘Checkmate COVID Celebrity Edition’ by Akshaya Patra Foundations in collaboration with Chess.com India and Prachura Padakannaya, CEO – Xcetra Talent Management.

IPL 2021: Apart from Yuzvendra Chahal, Viswanathan Anand will face Bollywood star Aamir Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Kannada film star Kiccha Sudeep besides singer Arijit Singh, song-writer Ananya Birla, Manu Kumar Jain, MD of Xiaomi India, Nikhil Kamath, Zerodha’s co-founder and film producer Sajid Nadiadwala besides Prachura Padakannaya.

IPL 2021: “Since March 2020, the Foundation has served over 128 million meals to people from vulnerable communities, who are facing difficulty arranging food for themselves due to the COVID-19 pandemic and containment measures to curb the outbreak”, the charity event said in a statement.

After Dhanashree Verma revealed the news to her fans, Vishwanathan Anand also took to Twitter to update his fans. The chess matches will be live-streamed on Chess.com’s YouTube channel on Sunday, June 13 at 5 PM. People can make donations on the live chat during the live stream.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinner is currently at home but will leave for Mumbai on June 14 as he will join others for a 14-day quarantine ahead of India’s Tour of Sri Lanka. India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in Colombo, beginning July 13. It will be an opportunity for Yuzvendra Chahal who has been struggling with his form of late. With the ICC T20 World Cup coming up, Chahal will aim to get back to his form.
