SA vs PAK: South Africa on Sunday defeated Pakistan by 17 runs to level the 3 match ODI series 1-1 with series decider scheduled for Wednesday. According to the information available, as per the earlier plan IPL bound South African cricketers were suppose to complete the 3 match ODI series before leaving for India.
But due to deteriorating Covid-19 situation in India – franchises wanted their played to assemble little early and that’s why South African cricketers have left for India 3 days early.
When queried, helpless Cricket South Africa had this to say – “In terms of an agreement between CSA and the BCCI, those players awarded IPL contracts are being released early to join their respective teams.”, said CSA’s release.
IPL 2021 – South African cricketers leave for IPL 2021, still will miss opening ties of their teams
There is anger in South Africa that these players are leaving early. The matter hasn’t gone down well with the South African cricket fraternity. In official circles, CSA’s agreement with the BCCI to release its players for the IPL in middle of home series is being questioned.
‘It is a case of board and players giving preference to the IPL 2021 over national duty’, said one of the former CSA board president.
Of the 10 South Africans who are due to play in IPL 2021, five were named in the ODI squad and were suppose to play the full series.
But despite of the 5 leaving series mid-way for the IPL 2021, they are certain to miss the opening ties for their respective franchises. CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan confirmed the situation to InsideSport.
“Ngidi will have to follow the same guidelines as others and will be put in quarantine once he arrives. Therefore he will not be available for selection for the opening game,” Vishwanathan confirmed.
Same is the case for Mumbai Indians Quinton de Kock, David Miller of Rajasthan Royals, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje of Delhi Capitals.
All these players will get into 7 days Quarantine after their arrival on Monday in India and will the opening match for their teams.
