IPL 2021: Panesar says, ‘IPL big litmus test for RCB’s Chahal, KKR’s Kuldeep Yadav’s ahead of T20 World Cup| Report- Former England spinner Monty Panesar, in a recent interview, spoke about the importance of spinners in IPL 2021 with regard to the upcoming World T20 later this year. He said that IPL 2021 will be a big litmus test for RCB’s Yuzvendra Chahal and KKR’s Kuldeep Yadav. He said that a bad IPL season might put their place in T20 World Cup in doubt, adding Harbhajan Singh might enter the squad if he has a good IPL season.
Speaking to The Times of India, Monty Panesar said, “The IPL will be a big litmus test for Chahal and Kuldeep. If they have a bad season, their T20 World Cup berths will be doubtful.”
Panesar believes that if CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja and DC’s R Ashwin are in the fray, he wouldn’t mind. He believes that the duo have experience and game-changing abilities.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing Jadeja and Ashwin back in the fray. If I was Virat, I would pick Ashwin-Jadeja ahead of Kuldeep-Chahal for the World T20. That’s because of their experience and game-changing abilities. They both have all-around abilities. They both are big-match players” Panesar told The Times of India.
In last 10 T20Is, Yuzvendra Chahal has scalped 9 wickets. Kuldeep has not gotten enough chances due to his lean patch of form since IPL 2019. He has played just 4 T20Is in the last 2 years. He last featured against Sri Lanka in 2020.
Meanwhile, R Ashwin is coming on the back of recent success in the India vs England Test series. He took 32 wickets in 4 matches, most in the tournament. Ashwin had last played a T20I against West Indies in 2017.
Interestingly, Panesar also felt that a good performance in IPL 2021 might see veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh join the selection race.
“This IPL is about the Indian spinners. You can’t undermine Harbhajan Singh. Why not pick him in the World Cup squad if he has a good IPL season? I think he has some cricket left in him. Ashwin, Jadeja, and even Harbhajan will have the opportunity to be in the World Cup squad. All they need is to have a good IPL season,” TOI quoted Monty Panesar as saying.
Bhajji had last for India in 2016. He has taken 150 wickets in 161 IPL matches- 5th highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League.
What do the stats say?
Yuzvendra Chahal- 62 wickets in 48 T20Is (Highest wicket-taker for India in shortest format)
Kuldeep Yadav- 39 wickets in 20 T20Is
R Ashwin- 52 wickets in 46 T20Is
R Jadeja- 39 wickets in 50 T20Is
Harbhajan Singh- 25 wickets in 28 T20Is
