IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians & Rohit Sharma’s opening game woes continue, suffers defeat for 9th consecutive year in the opening match- Mumbai Indians on Friday lost the opening match against RCB by 2 wickets. It was their 9th straight loss in the opening contest of IPL. Last year CSK had defeated Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets. In the last 9 years, DC, CSK, KKR, RCB, RPS – all have won the opening matches against Mumbai Indians.

In the match, RCB scored 159/9 in their stipulated 20 overs after being sent in to bat first. Chris Lynn scored 49 while SuryaKumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan contributed 31 and 28 runs respectively. Harshal Patel took a five-wicket haul. In reply, RCB chased down the target as AB De Villiers scored 48 runs while Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell contributed 33 and 39 runs respectively.

“That’s the most important thing I guess (to win tournaments). Not the first game. I thought it was a great effort.. great fight till the end. I thought we were 20 runs short with the kind of start we got. We made some mistakes in the first game, bound to happen,” Rohit Sharma said post-match.

Rohit was handed over the reins in 2013 after then MI captain Ricky Ponting stepped down mid-way due to inconsistent performance. Since than Rohit has been hailed as one of the most inspirations leader in IPL – but a leader whose team starts little slow.
