IPL 2021 Phase 2: Two teams who might have to appoint new captains for IPL 2nd leg – The BCCI has decided to the start remainder of IPL 2021 from September 17 and the final to be played on 10th October. The Indian cricket board will host 31 remaining IPL matches in UAE. What comes as a big headache is the packed international schedule which will also keep many overseas players busy with national duties. Some of the teams will be badly affected by this.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders will also be forced to look for new captains if their current skippers miss out.
IPL 2021 Phase 2- KKR is being captained by England captain Eoin Morgan while SRH appointed Kane Williamson as their skipper in the middle of the IPL 2021. However, both these players are likely to miss the second half of IPL in UAE due to national duties.
Eoin Morgan – England
England limited-overs captain is all set to miss the remainder of IPL 2021 as England will be playing a 3-match ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh in September, followed by two-match series in Pakistan. It is highly unlikely that ECB will allow their white-ball captain permission to participate in IPL. ECB’s director of cricket Ashley Giles has made it clear that even if the players are not picked for the bilateral series, they will not be given NOC’s to participate in IPL. It is to keep them fresh for the T20 World Cup, followed by Ashes.
IPL 2021 Phase 2 – Eoin Morgan was made the captain of KKR last year when Dinesh Kartik decided to step down from the captaincy last season. However, it did not change KKR’s fortune as they continue their below-par performance. In the current season, they are ranked seventh with just two wins in seven games while in IPL 2020 they missed out on qualifying as the finished on five.
Who could captain KKR in Morgan’s absence?
KKR can go with the veteran Harbhajan Singh or with a youngster Shubman Gill. Harbhajan played only three matches in the first phase out of seven and thus it is unlikely that he will get to lead Kolkata. Thus Gill has a great chance of getting a new role. With youngsters like Sanju Samson and Risabh Pant leading their Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021, we might see another youngster as a captain in IPL 2021 phase two.
Kane Williamson – New Zealand
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who was named as the skipper of SRH after removing David Warner is doubtful for IPL 2021 phase two. The BlackCaps led by Kane will play Pakistan in 3-match ODI and T20Is in UAE. The New Zealand Cricket Board would want their captain to fulfil his national commitments and also keep him in top shape for the T20 World Cup. However, there is no official word from NCB yet.
Who can lead SRH in Kane Williamson’s absence?
Bhuwneshwar Kumar will be the first choice in case Kane Williamson misses out. Kumar has led SRH in the past.
