KKR vs MI in IPL 2021: After restricting Mumbai Indians to 152 and Nitish Rana setting the platform with a brilliant 57, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were looking to break their MI jinx. But the match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday had something else in store. Fantastic bowling in the death overs from Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult saw Mumbai Indians beating KKR by 10 runs and make it 4 in a row and extend their winning record to 22 in 29 matches against Eoin Morgan’s team.
After setting a 152-run target, hardly anyone would have believed Mumbai could get their first win in IPL 2021. Suryakumar Yadav’s 50 was supposed to go in vain as Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill posted a 72-run stand during the modest chase. After 15 overs, KKR needed just 30 runs from 30 balls with the scorecard reading 122/4. But then the match turned around.
IPL 2021 – KKR vs MI: Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians continue dominance over KKR, make it 4 wins in a row
Nitish Rana’s wicket in the 15th over turned out to be the turning point as Mumbai Indians blew KKR away in the death overs, giving away only 20 runs in exchange for 4 wickets to win their first match of IPL 2021. KKR’s two power-hitters — Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russel failed to deliver as Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult snatched the match away from KKR.

KKR vs MI: Jasprit Bumrah, MI’s death-overs specialist, dealt a blow in the 19th over when his wide yorkers became unplayable for an experienced Dinesh Karthik. That over turned the match in MI’s favour as KKR could only score four runs from it. With 16 needed off last over, Trent Boult came into the attack and scalped Russell, giving away only 4 runs to win the match.
However, Mumbai Indians’ two spinners Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya must also be given credit for the win. Chahar was exceptional with 4/27 against KKR. As for Krunal, he bowled one over in the death that could have become a turning point for KKR. But despite bowling to Karthik, one of the best batters of spin, Krunal’s over yielded only 3 runs.
KKR vs MI: “Yes, disappointing (to lose). Played some really good cricket for most parts of the game. We looked comfortable in the chase, but they are a strong team, came back well and sad that it didn’t work out for us. We made a few mistakes that we need to sort out. A perfect game needs to be bold. It came to cost us in the last 10 overs of the game,” KKR captain Eoin Morgan said after the match.
“We needed to bat around and complete the chase. Not quite sure what happened if the pitch tends to go slow in the second innings, in the games that have been played so far, barring AB de Villiers in the chase. That seems to be telling a tale. We put ourselves in a good position to win today, but then not to win, that’s something we need to take care of,” Eoin Morgan added.
