IPL 2021: Sangakkara says, ‘We got to get things right very quickly’ after 10-wicket bashing by RCB

IPL 2021: Sangakkara says, ‘We got to get things right very quickly’ after 10-wicket bashing by RCB- Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara on Thursday highlighted the importance of coming back to winnings ways after their third successive loss in IPL 2021. He stressed that it has been four games only but they are got to get things right quickly.

“In terms of our bowling, we need to have slightly better defensive options to anticipate and read the game a little bit better as to what the batsman might do. We got to change our thinking a little bit and have a little more tactical know-how in terms of the game plan. A lot of areas we improve in for sure. A few positives also but you know it’s all about playing good and positive cricket and enjoying yourself and really expressing yourself. That’s the mantra here but at the same time execution is really important, especially on wickets that are flat and could be a joint effort between the bowlers and the fielding. So in order to get things, we got to get things right very quickly. It’s only been four games but games can slip quite easily. So, we’ve got to do some thinking. First, recover quickly and then get back to playing some good cricket as we know, we can.”

Sangakkara was mighty impressed by Shivam Dube.

“I thought Shivam batted really well. He showed a lot more intensity and he understands the other three games. You know one of the things that he matches up is his elegance to spin and that’s his real strength and today he showed that he had the ability to dominate the slow bowlers. He batted smartly; I thought he got a little bit ahead of time.  But, you were in quite a predicament after the powerplay.”

He added that the top-order batsmen need to play really well in the powerplays.

We need to bat smartly in the powerplay and keep those partnerships going and one or two need to score those big scores. Unfortunately, today we didn’t manage that. The middle order and lower middle order really fought well and that was quite impressive to see.”

“I think it’s on overall performance. Really have to tie together, good performances good with the bat not just with the ball and back it up with some really good fielding. Unfortunately, we had a game that we nearly chased down that we should win quite easily. We made it quite tough and was quite outplayed in the next two. Today, you know completely outgunned and outplayed by RCB. So, you got to put in the context and have perfect games. You got to be much better at executing your game plans and keep that self-belief and self-confidence going. Really good pictures now out there. A lot of opportunities now for the batsman to score runs. It’s really tough on those totals for bowlers to really manage those totals and keep the batsman in check. So we need to match the other side and intensity,” he added.

Sangakkara was all praise for centurion Devdutt Padikkal.

“I thought it was an exceptional inning. He batted really well; played the shots he knew could play. And, he kind of like anticipated some of the deliveries that are going to be bowled. I think he showed a lot of maturity to bat through. Of course, he was batting with Virat so there was a lot of conversation out there. There was a lot of talk about what to do and how to do it. It was an exceptional inning, very impressive,” he opined.

Sangakkara also stressed on the importance of giving respect to good balls. The only positive he took out of the match the middle and lower-middle order batting.

“The batsman’s strength, if you are batting out in the middle and certain fields are set depending on if the wicket is flat or not. There are certain options that you take. Basically, that are more in your control than out in risk. So I think it’s more about the balance and curbing your natural instinct to play strokes. The whole in T20 is to have that intent to score and when the ball is not in your area then you try and rotate the strike and you respect some balls especially. Today we struggled in the first 6 to 7 (overs) and then the next 13 overs after having lost a lot of wickets; we still managed to get 176. So, you see the ability there, you just need to build the partnerships and one of the top four need to get a big score.”
