IPL 2021: AB de Villiers requested to play for South Africa again by Jamaican sprinting superstar – After his incredible innings against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Sunday’s IPL 2021 match, AB de Villiers is again getting calls for returning to the South African team. This time though, the request isn’t coming from anyone back home but someone from fellow T20 superstar Chris Gayle’s homeland.
Jamaican sprint star Yohan Blake has asked South African authorities to try and get de Villiers to return to the national side. The former Proteas captain smashed a breathtaking 76 off just 34 balls and hit 9 fours and 3 sixes. The innings proved a match-winning one as it took his team to a daunting total of 204/4.
“Wow de Villiers is on a different level. South Africa, come on, you need this man. @ABdeVilliers17 @OfficialCSA,” Yohan Blake wrote on Twitter after watching the spectacular hitting of AB in the IPL match between RCB and KKR.
Olympic champion asks AB de Villiers to return to South African team
The former Olympic 100m silver medalist is an avid cricket fan and had even earned the distinction of ringing the bell before the start of a day’s play in the 2012 England vs South Africa match at Lord’s. He is known to be an avid cricket fan and even claimed, probably in a light-hearted manner, in an interview during that Test match that he is a better cricketer than a runner.
AB de Villiers himself has expressed the desire to play for South Africa after announcing his retirement from international cricket in 2018. He is especially keen on playing the World T20 for the Proteas that takes place later this year in the same country where he is playing currently.
In fact, the RCB superstar is all set to talk to the coach of the South African team Mark Boucher soon to discuss the matter.
“We are lined up to have a chat sometime during the IPL. But yes, we’ve been talking about it already. If there’s no space for me, so be it. If I can slot in there, it will be fantastic if all those things fall in place,” de Villiers revealed.
