‘IPL helped getting more consumers for Hotstar content’

Overseas expansion, sharing Disney+ content among Hotstar future plans

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 has not just helped Hotstar create global streaming records, but it also increased consumers for other content on Star Sports OTT platform.

Speaking at the launch of new web series Hostages, Hotstar EVP & Head of Original Content Nikhil Madhok has revealed the IPL gains for the OTT platform. Cricket’s biggest professional league has seen Hotstar users jump from 150 million in April to 300 million over one month during the IPL period. It has also created a global streaming record for concurrent viewership of 18.6 million during final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Madhok said that IPL was very well received and has been a tremendous success on Hotstar. This was also evident in the 100 growth in consumers from 150 million to 300 million in a matter of just one month.

“IPL has helped a lot in terms of getting more consumers on board and especially for Hotstar VIP and Hotstar Specials. Both in terms of the number of viewers who consume this content and the number of people who become subscribers of Hotstar VIP. However, I would like to point out, that Criminal Justice became a major hit. If you look purely at numbers, CJ has crossed all and stood out,” exchange4media has quoted Madhok as saying.

Meanwhile, Madhok has also confirmed that the Disney+ content will preview on Hotstar. However whether the content consumption would be subscription based or it would be a part of Hotstar VIP, it is yet to be decided.

There are also expansion plans to take Hotstar India as well.
